How Family Sharing works
With Family Sharing, the organizer sets up location sharing for the entire group. Once this feature is enabled, the organizer's location is automatically shared with all current and future family members. Afterward, each member can decide whether to share their own location as well.
If location sharing is accepted, the location will appear in the Find My app, the Messages app, and, starting with watchOS 6, also in the Find My app. With location sharing enabled, another family member can help locate the device via Find My if it is lost.
Share location with family
Location sharing can be enabled in the iPhone or iPad settings. On a Mac, this is done via the Apple menu and System Preferences. Under Family and Location Sharing, you can select individual people who are allowed to see your location. Additionally, the option to automatically share your location can be enabled so that newly added family members can see your location immediately.
If Family Sharing isn't already set up, you can also start sharing via the "Find My" app. In the "People" tab, simply select the desired person. A menu will then open where you can select "Share Location.".
Location announcements
Notifications can be set up to inform you when a family member arrives at or leaves a specific location. Similarly, recurring notifications can be created to alert you if someone is not at a particular location for a specified period. Set device for location sharing
If you use multiple Apple devices, you can specify which device to use for location sharing. This is done via Settings, your name, and "Find My." There, you can activate "Use this device as my location." This ensures that the displayed location corresponds to the device you are actually carrying.
Help finding lost devices
If "Find My" is activated and location sharing is enabled, family members can assist in locating a lost device. They have access to location data as well as the online or offline status. Additionally, a sound can be played on the device to make it easier to find. A Lost Mode is also available if a passcode has been set. If necessary, the device can be remotely wiped.

Share location in messages or maps
With iOS 17 or iPadOS 17, even more features are available. Estimated arrival times and locations can be shared in the Maps or Messages app. Journey Guide notifies contacts upon arrival at the destination or if anything unusual happens. Live Location shows movements in real time, providing greater transparency when someone is on the go.
