One week after iOS 27.2, Apple is apparently already rolling out the next version. The first beta of iOS 27.3 is also being released, and Apple has promised a fix for the Mac. Apple itself has yet to confirm or announce a release date for iOS 27.2.1.
iOS 27.2 has been available to everyone since October 26, three days after the launch of the iPhone Duo, which shipped with iOS 27.1. Now, iOS 27.2.1 has appeared in MacRumors' visitor logs, indicating that Apple is already testing the update.
It would be the next step in the series of updates for iOS 27, which began in September with the major version. An overview of what iOS 27.2 itself includes can be found in the iOS 27.2 release date and features overview.
Key Facts at a Glance
- Apple is testing iOS 27.2.1 according to MacRumors' visitor logs; a date is not known.
- In eight cases this year, there was a gap of two to 14 days between such a report and its publication.
- A small update is expected, containing bug fixes, security patches, or both, including for the iPhone Duo.
- Apple has announced a fix for the command-line programs for macOS, but without a version number or date.
- Apple has announced that the latest developer beta, expected to be the first version of iOS 27.3, will be released on November 4th; the final version will follow in December.
What is known about iOS 27.2.1
MacRumors anticipates a minor update that will fix bugs, close security gaps, or both, including for the iPhone Duo. This is an expectation, not a changelog, as changelogs only show the version number, not the content.
Which vulnerabilities an update closes usually only becomes apparent upon release, as Apple, according to its own list, only discloses details of its security updates once the fix is available. Most recently, Apple closed 329 security vulnerabilities with iOS 27.2 and the concurrent system updates.
Two to 14 days between notification and update
MacRumors' visitor logs have repeatedly proven to be an early indicator of minor iOS versions this year. The publication data comes from the same list.
| Version | Message from the logs | Publication | Distance |
|---|---|---|---|
| iOS 26.2.1 | January 12 | January 26 | 14 days |
| iOS 26.3.1 | February 22 | March 4 | 10 days |
| iOS 26.4.1 | April 6 | April 8 | 2 days |
| iOS 26.4.2 | April 20 | April 22 | 2 days |
| iOS 26.5.1 | May 22 | June 1st | 10 days |
| iOS 26.5.2 | June 15 | June 29 | 14 days |
| iOS 26.6.1 | August 7 | August 17 | 10 days |
| iOS 27.0.1 | September 23 | September 28 | 5 days |
The logs are therefore useful as an indication that a version is coming, but not as a calendar. Based on these intervals, I expect iOS 27.2.1 to be released around mid-November.
The Mac is getting a promised fix
MacRumors suggests a possible macOS version for Mac: 27.2.1. The reason, according to an Apple support document, is that the private keys of eight intermediate certificate authorities belonging to the Indian provider eMudhra have been compromised. Six of these keys could be used to create certificates valid for any website.
Since October 19, Apple has been automatically blocking the affected certificates in Safari, Mail, and apps that use Apple's network and security frameworks. No software update was required. eMudhra's own investigation found no evidence of misuse, but it cannot rule it out entirely.
A vulnerability remains with command-line programs in macOS, such as curl and git. They check against their own certificate list, which is not protected by Apple's block. Apple intends to fix this in a future macOS update, but has not yet specified a version number or release date. An update for the current macOS 27 with the number 27.2.1 would therefore be the logical choice, but this number has not been confirmed.
The first beta of iOS 27.3 is coming soon
Regardless, the schedule for the next major iOS version is proceeding as planned. In its Chinese newsroom, Apple lists November 4th as the start date for testing with the latest developer beta, as Apple Intelligence is launching iOS 27.3 in China. This is likely the first beta of iOS 27.3, which, due to the time difference, will be available in other regions on the evening of November 3rd.
Apple has announced the final version for December, without specifying a date. Based on previous years, this would likely be between December 11th and 22nd.
Don't postpone iOS 27.2 for the next update
If you haven't installed iOS 27.2 yet, I wouldn't wait for iOS 27.2.1. The fixes from iOS 27.2 are available, while the content and release date of the next version are unknown. If the installation gets stuck, the solutions for iPhone update problems should help.
According to Apple, most Mac users don't need to take any action. Administrators who don't want to wait can find instructions in the support document to remove the affected root certificates themselves. However, this may prevent some websites from being audited, and a macOS update could revert the change.
Do you install minor updates like iOS 27.2.1 on the same day, or do you prefer to wait a few days to see if any problems arise? Let us know in the comments how long you usually wait.
