The update has arrived exactly as previously suspected: After signs of iOS 26.4.2 surfaced earlier this week, Apple has now officially released the new version. As with all .x updates since [date/timeframe], this interim version focuses on stability and security, not on new features.
According to Apple's official release notes, iOS 26.4.2 contains important bug fixes and security updates. Apple will likely provide a detailed list of the specific bugs and vulnerabilities addressed in a separate security content document shortly, as usual.
Here's how to install the update
Installation is as straightforward as usual:
- iPhone: Settings → General → Software Update
- iPad: Settings → General → Software Update
- Tap “Download and install” once iOS 26.4.2 is displayed.
The download size is expected to be around 500 MB to 1 GB – typical for a point update. The installation itself takes approximately 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the device and internet connection. The device cannot be used during the installation.
Which devices will receive the update
iOS 26.4.2 is available for all devices that support iOS 26. This includes iPhone 11 and later, as well as iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later. iPadOS 26.4.2 has the same compatibility as iPadOS 26.
Who should update?
In general, all users should install the update promptly – primarily because of the included security patches. iOS 26.4.2: What's next?
Following iOS 26.4.2, Apple is focusing on two parallel development paths. On the one hand, testing is underway for iOS 26.5, which is currently in its third beta phase. This update will, among other things, introduce the foundations for Apple Maps advertising and end-to-end encryption for RCS messages.
On the other hand, work is intensifying on iOS 27, which Apple will present at WWDC on June 8th. The new version will bring a completely redesigned Siri, undo and redo functions for the home screen, and stricter network security requirements.
Until the WWDC keynote in just under seven weeks, iOS 26.4.2 is likely to be the last or penultimate interim update. After that, Apple's public communication will focus on iOS 27, which will be released to all users in the fall.
