WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will use AI to summarize unread messages from multiple chats simultaneously. A preview of this feature appears in the current TestFlight version, according to WABetaInfo. Meta continues to rely on a privacy-friendly system called Private Processing.

WhatsApp has tested several new features and experimented with AI functions in recent months. Now, another feature is being added that should be of particular interest to frequent users: a comprehensive AI summary of all unread chats. Anyone who, after a long absence, has 50 new messages in 10 different chats will soon be able to get a concise overview at the touch of a button.

The feature builds on the existing AI summaries, which can already analyze individual chats. The new aspect is that you no longer have to open each chat individually – instead, you receive a combined overview of the most important content from all unread conversations. The leak comes from messenger expert WABetaInfo, who discovered the feature in the current TestFlight version for iOS.

What exactly is new?

Currently, WhatsApp's AI summaries only work on a per-chat basis. Users in certain regions can tap "Summarize" within a conversation and then receive a compact overview of the key points of the latest messages.

The new feature expands on this principle. A new button, “Get a summary” (likely translated as “Show summary”), will appear in the chat tab as soon as the “Unread” filter is activated. Tapping this button will then generate a comprehensive summary of all unread chats simultaneously – without having to open each chat individually.

For frequent users, this could mean a significant time saving. Someone who has 100+ messages in 20 different chats in the morning can get an overview with a single summary and then decide specifically which chats need attention and which don't.

Data protection through private processing

Meta emphasizes the privacy aspect of its AI feature. The summaries are generated using a system called Private Processing. The unique aspect is that the content is processed in such a way that Meta has no access to the specific messages, yet a meaningful summary can still be created.

Technically, this works through a combination of encryption and special AI models that are only activated at the user's request. Whether the system meets the requirements of strict data protection authorities like the German Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (BDSG) will become clear in the coming months. This issue is particularly sensitive for messaging apps.

When the feature will be released

A specific release date has not yet been announced. According to WABetaInfo, the feature is in development for both iOS and Android – suggesting it could enter the beta channel relatively soon. Based on past experience, it then takes a few more weeks for public release, usually initially in select countries.

Whether the feature will even be available in Germany is also still uncertain. Meta has often rolled out AI features in the EU with delays – or with limited functionality – due to the AI Act and the GDPR.

Context: WhatsApp is becoming an AI messenger

The new feature demonstrates how extensively Meta is integrating AI into WhatsApp. Several AI features have been added in recent months:

Meta AI as a chat partner within the app
AI summaries for individual chats
Automatic reply suggestions for frequently sent messages
The paid WhatsApp Plus subscription with additional features (albeit primarily cosmetic)

This increasingly positions WhatsApp as an AI-first messenger. This is relevant for iPhone users because WhatsApp remains the most widely used messenger in Germany. Apple's Apple Intelligence strategy doesn't compete with Meta – they are rather two different approaches with different strengths.

Whether users will actually adopt the AI summary depends heavily on its quality. If the overview is precise and helpful, the feature could quickly become the standard.
