No sooner has iOS 27.2 hit iPhones than the next update is already on the horizon. iOS 27.3 is likely to be the last major update of the year – and previous years' release dates provide a fairly accurate indication of when it might arrive. However, for users in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, it could be a smaller update than elsewhere.
Apple released iOS 27.2 on October 26, including new features for Apple Music and the HomePod. This year's version numbering is different than usual because iOS 27.1 launched with the iPhone Duo and wasn't released for other iPhones. iOS 27.3 thus takes the place previously held by the x.2 update in December.
This is the third point update of iOS 27, whose features, compatible iPhones and dates have been known since its launch in September.
Key Facts at a Glance
- iOS 27.3 is the update that will be released in December this year; iOS 27.1 only ran on the iPhone Duo.
- The first beta for developers is still pending.
- Over the past four years, there have been 38 to 49 days between the first beta and release.
- Candidates for the update include the new Health app and four additional languages for Siri AI, both of which Apple has announced for this year.
- Neither of these issues currently affect users with German system language.
The first beta is still pending
A test version of iOS 27.3 is not yet available. Since iOS 27.2 has been available to everyone since October 26th, the way is clear for the next testing cycle. I expect the first beta for developers next week, starting Monday, November 2nd.
Developer betas are typically followed by public betas, and shortly before release, a release candidate is released. Apple used four betas and one release candidate for iOS 27.2.
Mid-December is the most likely date
The December update has always been released between December 11th and 13th for the past four years – although the first beta started sometimes at the end of October, sometimes at the beginning of November:
| Update | First beta | Publication | Distance |
|---|---|---|---|
| iOS 16.2 | Tue, October 25, 2022 | Tue, 13 December 2022 | 49 days |
| iOS 17.2 | Thursday, October 26, 2023 | Monday, December 11, 2023 | 46 days |
| iOS 18.2 | Wed, October 23, 2024 | Wed, December 11, 2024 | 49 days |
| iOS 26.2 | Tue, 4 November 2025 | Fri, December 12, 2025 | 38 days |
If the first beta of iOS 27.3 arrives on November 2nd, the release window from previous years suggests a timeframe between Thursday, December 10th, and Monday, December 21st. I expect a release for all compatible iPhones in mid-December. This is supported not only by the release schedule but also by the calendar: even last year, when the first beta didn't arrive until early November, the update was released on December 12th.
What iOS 27.3 could bring
Apple has announced two new features for this year, but hasn't yet released them. The redesigned Health app, featuring Health Age, a longevity section, and AI-powered insights, is slated for release this year, according to Apple's September announcement. It was already included in the iOS 27.2 betas before Apple removed it with the fourth beta.
In addition, four more languages will be available for Siri AI: Traditional Chinese, Norwegian, Turkish, and Vietnamese. Apple says these should be released by the end of the year. Apple hasn't specified a particular update for either of the new features; however, with a mid-December release date, iOS 27.3 would be the last opportunity to see both announcements this year.
An update that will be smaller in this country
I believe that iOS 27.3 is an update where German-speaking users will initially benefit little from the major new features. According to Apple, the new Health app will launch in US English, and German is once again not among the four announced languages for Siri AI.
I would still install it quickly, as iOS 27.2 already closed numerous security vulnerabilities. If the installation fails, the usual solutions for iPhone update problems should help.
Would you install iOS 27.3 on day one, even if the Health app and the new Siri languages don't affect you right away? Let us know in the comments whether you'll update immediately or wait a few days.
