Siri AI now speaks French, Spanish, and three other languages. In the same announcement, Apple states that four more languages will be added by the end of the year. German is not on either list.
With the 27.2 update, Apple has enabled Siri AI to support five additional languages: French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. This was announced in a brief news item in the Apple Newsroom, published simultaneously with iOS 27.2 and the other updates. Since the launch of iOS 27 on September 14, the assistant had only been available in English.
According to the same report, Chinese (Traditional), Norwegian, Turkish, and Vietnamese are expected to follow by the end of the year. The update does not change the functionality of Siri AI. Apple continues to offer Siri AI as a beta version.
Key Facts at a Glance
- Since the 27.2 updates, Siri AI runs in French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish in addition to English.
- Chinese (Traditional), Norwegian, Turkish and Vietnamese are expected to be added by the end of 2026.
- There is no set date for German. The same applies to Italian, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, and Simplified Chinese.
- Siri AI remains blocked on iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches within the EU. In Switzerland, Siri AI now also works in French on iPhones.
Ten out of 16 languages by the end of the year
Apple Intelligence supports 16 languages, including German. According to Apple's plan, Siri AI will cover ten of them by the end of the year.
| Siri AI status | Languages |
|---|---|
| since September 14, 2026 (iOS 27) | English |
| since October 26, 2026 (27.2 updates) | French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish |
| announced until the end of 2026 | Chinese (Traditional), Norwegian, Turkish, Vietnamese |
| no appointment necessary | Chinese (Simplified), Danish, German, Italian, Dutch, Swedish |
According to Apple, Siri AI requires a device with Apple Intelligence set to a supported language. Therefore, Siri AI will not function on a device with German as the language setting, even though Apple Intelligence itself runs in German. The determining factor is the same language setting that is used when setting up Apple Intelligence.
Siri AI is also among the server-side features that have daily usage limits. Apple explicitly mentions the assistant again in the footnotes of the announcement.
The ban in the EU remains in place
According to the report, Siri AI is currently unavailable in the EU on iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS. Apple cites ongoing discussions with the EU as the reason. The reason is the interoperability requirements imposed by the DMA, which are preventing Siri AI from being rolled out on iPhones and iPads. Siri AI thus remains on the list of Apple features missing in the EU.
A Bloomberg assessment from October 4th cites roughly five months after the iOS 27 launch as the best-case scenario. Based on September 14th, that would be mid-February 2027.
Siri AI can be used on Macs and Vision Pros in the EU. With macOS 27.2 and visionOS 27.2, the five new languages are now also available for selection there.
What's changing in Switzerland
Switzerland is not part of the EU, so the block doesn't apply there. Siri AI has been running on Swiss iPhones since September, but so far only in English. French will be added with iPhone 27.2. This means that Siri AI can now be used in the local language for the first time in French-speaking Switzerland.
For the two other major national languages, the situation remains unchanged: neither German nor Italian is supported. Anyone in German-speaking Switzerland or Ticino who wants to use Siri AI on their iPhone must continue to switch their device and Siri to one of the six supported languages. Austria is part of the EU, and the same restriction applies there as in Germany.
Germany is more attached to Brussels than to technology
A pattern emerges among the six languages without a release date. German, Italian, Dutch, Danish, and Swedish have their core markets in the EU. The sixth, Simplified Chinese, is tied to China, where Apple Intelligence is slated to launch without Siri AI. Norwegian and Turkish, on the other hand, are expected later this year, and both countries are outside the EU. French, Spanish, and Portuguese have large markets outside the EU, such as in Canada, Latin America, and Brazil.
I therefore expect Siri AI to only become available in German once Apple releases the assistant for iPhones in the EU. At Apple Intelligence, both steps were already implemented simultaneously: In March 2025, iOS 18.4 brought both the EU launch on the iPhone and the German language support. Outside the EU, there is only a small German-speaking market, essentially Switzerland.
If you want to use Siri AI in Germany or Austria right now, you can only do so on a Mac or Vision Pro. One of the six supported languages must be set as both the system and Siri language.
Would you switch your Mac to English or French for Siri AI, or are you waiting until the assistant speaks German and is also available on the iPhone? Let us know in the comments which language is set and whether you already use Siri AI in your daily life.
