Five out of ten points sounds mediocre. For a foldable smartphone, it's the best score iFixit has ever awarded. The iPhone Duo's battery life significantly outperforms the competition. However, the inner display might be showing the point where the first devices start to break.
iFixit disassembled the iPhone Duo two days after its release and published the results in a detailed teardown report. For this, the team not only opened the device but also subjected it to a dust test and created a 3D model of the hinge from CT scans, patents, and teardown images.
The timing is perfect. Shortly after its launch, reports of lines and cracks in the internal display began to surface, some even during setup. This model was intended to demonstrate the potential mechanical causes of such damage. All the key specifications for the device can be found in the overview for the iPhone Duo.
Key Facts at a Glance
- iFixit has given it a preliminary score of 5 out of 10 points, the highest score ever for a foldable smartphone.
- Display damage is most frequent where the cable gap meets the middle hinge support. There is no confirmed cause.
- Both battery cells are released from the adhesive via an electrical impulse; according to iFixit, this is the best battery removal method for a foldable phone.
- Dust gets into the hinge, less than with the competition, but enough to cause a creaking noise afterwards.
- The internal display and hinge are the biggest cost factors. A new internal display costs half as much as a new device in Germany.
Five out of ten points
The assessment is preliminary. iFixit is still waiting for replacement parts that are expected to arrive through Apple's self-repair program. However, the repair manual for the iPhone Duo is already available, which iFixit considers a positive.
For comparison: The iPhone 18 Pro scored seven out of ten in the teardown in September. This puts the duo two points below Apple's current Pro models, but ahead of all foldables iFixit has reviewed so far. The team summarizes it succinctly:
For a first attempt, Apple has done a good job.
The internal details also deserve praise. iFixit was able to remove the frame around the inner display without breaking it, whereas it crumbled during removal of the Galaxy Z Fold8. The outer display can also be removed intact. The logic board is single-layer. Almost every iPhone since the iPhone 8 has had a dual-layer board; exceptions include the iPhone XR and the iPhone SE.
Where the display damage begins
In the damage photos submitted by users, the breaks are concentrated in one area: at the transition from the ribbon cable slot to the middle hinge support, slightly below the cable entry point. The cable between the two halves of the device is always a suspect in foldable phones. However, iFixit doesn't consider it the most likely cause here, as the symptoms point in another direction.
The 3D model offers a possible explanation. If the middle support strip doesn't lower far enough when the device is folded, the curved display crease presses against it, creating a stress point. iFixit explicitly states that this is only one possible explanation. Several edges meet at this point, meaning that many components could be responsible.
Apple's support document does not provide a software fix for this issue. If problems with the iPhone Duo's hinge cannot be resolved otherwise, Apple will replace the assembly containing the inner display.
Dust in the hinge
For the dust test, iFixit placed the two devices in a bag of fluorescent powder, opened and closed them several times, and then disassembled them. Less powder was found in the hinge than previously seen in the Galaxy Z Fold8 and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold. Nevertheless, the hinge creaked after the test.
iFixit's conclusion is accordingly: The Duo shares the same sensitivity to sand as other foldable phones. The beach therefore remains a bad place for the device.
Two batteries that detach cleanly
The device has two battery cells with a combined capacity of 19.1 Wh. Both are attached with the electrically releasable adhesive that Apple also uses in its Pro series: A current pulse releases the cell, eliminating the need for prying. iFixit calls it the best battery design yet for a foldable device and hopes to see this in every foldable device.
The watt-hours match what was previously known. Apple's EU label specifies 4,883 mAh for the iPhone Duo, while a leak from China in July indicated two cells with 2,962 and 1,921 mAh. The ratio of the two cells corresponds to the watt-hours from the teardown.
| Cell | Watt-hours (iFixit) | Capacity (leaked July) |
|---|---|---|
| Large cell | 11.6 Wh | 2,962 mAh |
| Small cell | 7.5 Wh | 1,921 mAh |
| In total | 19.1 Wh | 4,883 mAh (EU label) |
How much the repair costs in this country
iFixit lists the US prices: $999 for a new internal display without AppleCare, $49 for the top layer, and $19 with AppleCare. A new internal display thus costs half as much as an entire device.
The same applies in Germany. According to Apple's repair cost estimate for the iPhone Duo, the inner display costs €1,149 without AppleCare; the device itself starts at €2,299.
| Repair | Without AppleCare | With AppleCare |
|---|---|---|
| Inner display | 1.149 € | 99 € |
| Top layer | 55 € | 19 € |
| Outer display | 489 € | 29 € |
| Battery | 269 € | 0 € |
The inner display's top layer is replaceable, but it's not a self-replaceable screen protector. According to iFixit, Apple's process requires special tools and precise alignment. Without the layer, the crease might even be more visible than on the Galaxy Z Fold8, and the glossy surface underneath scratches more easily.
Modular, but not without tools
In May, a leak from China promised a particularly easy-to-repair foldable phone, where individual modules could be separated without special tools. The top rating among foldable phones confirms the general direction, but not the specifics.
iFixit needed five different screwdrivers for the teardown. There are four pentalobe screws at the opening instead of the usual two, and many more around the main camera. iFixit estimates that replacing the internal display is slow and delicate. An average DIYer would need three to five hours for this on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. It should be somewhat faster on the Duo because the other half of the device can remain closed.
Easy on the battery, tricky on the display
I think the rating is fair, and it shows where Apple stands with its first foldable phone. Apple has solved the battery issue. The adhesive was already an improvement in the Pro series and works well in both cells in the Duo. The inner display and hinge, on the other hand, cost the most points, and that's precisely where expensive damage occurs.
iFixit itself advises:
Duo owners should treat this display like a raw egg.
The voltage spike in the model is a hypothesis, not a proven fact. If true, it's a mechanical issue and not one that can be fixed with an update. Users of a Duo without AppleCare face a risk of €1,149 for damage outside of warranty; with AppleCare, the risk is €99. Further news about the device can be found on the iPhone Duo page.
