Foldable displays often develop more noticeable creases over time. Apple has a unique solution for this in the iPhone Duo: the top layer covering the inner display can be peeled off and replaced with a new one. This was stated by the manager responsible for hardware.
Kate Bergeron, Apple's Vice President of Hardware Engineering, confirmed the replaceability in an interview with content creator Angelica Siciliani Fendi. She was referring to the top layer that covers the foldable inner display on the iPhone Duo.
Apple had already described the display's construction at its unveiling. A scratch-resistant coating and a top layer made of a nanotextured polymer, designed to reduce reflections and make the crease less visible, lie over the OLED panel. According to Bergeron, this layer is replaceable.
Key Facts at a Glance
- According to Apple, the top layer over the inner display of the iPhone Duo can be peeled off and replaced.
- Its matte surface is designed to make the crease in the center of the display less visible.
- With AppleCare, the replacement costs 19 euros in Germany and 19 US dollars in the USA.
- The iPhone Duo can be pre-ordered starting October 16th.
What Bergeron said
Bergeron said that the matte coating of the display contributes significantly to minimizing the crease. On top of that is a top layer into which Apple has invested considerable development work to ensure it wears down as slowly as possible.
Then comes the crucial sentence: The layer is replaceable; you can peel it off and get a new one. For customers, that's a good thing, according to Bergeron.
How much the exchange costs
Apple lists the top layer as a separate item in its iPhone repair cost calculator, labeled "Oberschicht" (cover layer) in the German calculator. The prices only appear when AppleCare service options are selected instead of the standard service options. I compared both versions on October 1st, the German and the US versions.
| Service with AppleCare | Germany | USA |
|---|---|---|
| Battery service | 0 Euro | $0 |
| Cover layer (surface layer) | 19 euros | 19 US dollars |
| Damage to the front display | 29 euros | 29 US dollars |
| Rear glass damage | 29 euros | 29 US dollars |
| Damage to the internal display | 99 euros | 99 US dollars |
| Other unintentional damage | 99 euros | 99 US dollars |
| Theft or loss | 129 euros | 149 US dollars |
Except for theft and loss, the amounts are identical. Replacing the top layer is therefore the cheapest chargeable item on the list, and even a damaged internal display costs no more with a protection plan than any other damage. The calculator does not show the cost of a replacement without AppleCare.
The iPhone Duo itself costs from €2,299 in this country; it can be pre-ordered from October 16th and will be available in stores on October 23rd.
The most vulnerable area becomes a wear part
I consider the replaceability to be more important than any durability claim. The inner display is the only surface of the Duo without Ceramic Shield, and that's precisely where the crease remains visible as the surface wears down. With a replaceable top layer, this weak point becomes a consumable part, similar to a battery.
This shifts the balance of considerations for the purchase decision. Anyone planning to use a foldable device for several years no longer has to accept that the center of the display will visibly deteriorate over time. The decisive factor becomes the price without AppleCare: if it's low, the cover layer is a minor maintenance item; if it's high, an AppleCare protection plan with its benefits in Germany remains the obvious choice for the Duo.
