This framework is intended to allow users to set a different voice assistant as the default. The feature is currently disabled, but developers can already identify the relevant section in the system.
Beyond the usual improvements like optimizations to the Liquid Glass interface, offline song lyrics in Apple Music, and adjustments to Apple Podcasts, there's much more going on underneath. The beta shows that Apple is working on a crucial building block for greater openness.
How Siri's transition could unfold
According to newly discovered code, a section will appear in iOS settings where an alternative voice assistant can be selected. Once an assistant is chosen, it will take over the role previously reserved for Siri. This includes activation via the side button. This feature aligns with earlier discoveries in older betas, where experimental settings for the side button were already visible.
It's also interesting to note that third-party assistants won't just appear as apps. The code contains a hint that an assistant could display its own interface directly on the home screen. Apple calls this layer Springboard. This would allow an external assistant to have a native interface, similar to Siri. This would enable deeper system integrations that were previously unthinkable.
This could, for the first time, allow a direct switch from Siri to ChatGPT, Gemini or other assistants at a level that is no longer solely app-based.
Why Apple is taking this step
This development aligns with a Bloomberg report from May, which stated that Apple was working on a mechanism to allow users to replace Siri as their default assistant. This stems from European Union regulations demanding greater choice and aiming to counteract monopolistic structures. The current technical foundation in iOS 26.2 confirms this approach.
Besides regulatory reasons, the current situation surrounding Siri also plays a role. The new Siri generation with Apple Intelligence has not yet been released. For those who already need more functions, faster responses, or AI-based features, an alternative assistant would be a sensible step.
However, there's a possibility that this new feature will only be available in the EU. Apple has rolled out many changes exclusively for this region in recent months. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether the Assistant update will launch globally or initially be limited to a specific region.
