Apple regularly rolls out firmware updates for its AirPods to improve existing features or prepare for new ones. While many of these updates happen silently in the background, they play a crucial role in the performance, stability, and compatibility of the devices. With the new firmware for AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3, Apple is focusing precisely on this.

The new firmware for AirPods Pro 3 is version 8B25, while version 8B21 has been released for AirPods Pro 2. Both updates follow the previous version 8A358, which was released in October. There is no official information yet regarding changes or new features. Nevertheless, there are indications that Apple is laying the groundwork for future features – especially in connection with iOS 26.2.

New firmware versions: 8B21 and 8B25

Firmware versions 8B21 (AirPods Pro 2) and 8B25 (AirPods Pro 3) replace the previous firmware 8A358. As usual, Apple is not releasing any release notes for these updates, which is typical for AirPods firmware updates. Nevertheless, it is likely that, in addition to general performance improvements and bug fixes, preparations for new features are also included.

What else might be included in the update

Even without official confirmation, it can be assumed that Apple has implemented general stability improvements, minor bug fixes, and perhaps also optimizations to audio processing or Bluetooth connectivity with the new firmware, as usual. Such adjustments usually run silently in the background but noticeably improve everyday use.

This is how the firmware is installed

Manually updating AirPods is not possible. The firmware is installed automatically once certain conditions are met. The AirPods must be in their charging case, which should be connected to a power source and near a paired iPhone, iPad, or Mac. The case should remain closed, ideally for at least 30 minutes. Only then will the update be transferred and installed in the background.

Apple focuses on quiet optimization rather than big announcements

Apple regularly updates the firmware of its AirPods models – usually without much fanfare, but with a clear strategic purpose. You can expect classic bug fixes and improvements. Even if no spectacular new features are announced, this quiet fine-tuning is part of Apple's typical update strategy – behind the scenes, but effective.
