Tesla is working on Apple CarPlay integration

For a long time, Tesla was one of the few major automakers without Apple CarPlay support. While most brands have long since made the system standard, Tesla consistently pursued its own infotainment solution. Now, a change of course is emerging: Tesla is working on integrating Apple CarPlay into its vehicles. This development could transform the user experience and attract new customer groups.

The decision to forgo Apple CarPlay has repeatedly sparked debate. Many appreciated Tesla's in-house infotainment system, while others saw the lack of CarPlay support as an unnecessary obstacle. The news that Tesla is now testing the system comes as a surprise, but it demonstrates how strongly customer demand influences the market. Its potential launch in the coming months is a step that is both technically and strategically significant.

Tesla opens its infotainment system to CarPlay for the first time

According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Tesla is currently testing the integration of Apple CarPlay. Several people familiar with the project confirm these internal tests. Tesla has reportedly spoken internally of a launch "in the coming months," but the plans are not yet finalized. A later release is therefore still possible.

Until now, Tesla has used a completely proprietary system that integrates navigation, media, vehicle functions, a web browser, and other services. This independence has always been one of the reasons why CarPlay wasn't supported. Nevertheless, Apple CarPlay is now standard across almost all manufacturers, which is why the lack of this feature has been increasingly criticized.

Tesla is planning an implementation that differs significantly from the rest of the industry. CarPlay will be embedded within a window in the existing user interface. The Tesla interface will therefore remain in the foreground, while CarPlay runs as a component of it. A full-screen mode like those offered by other brands is not planned.

Tesla is using the classic wireless CarPlay version, not the new CarPlay Ultra that Apple recently introduced. CarPlay Ultra would have allowed for deeper integration, including expanded layouts and more direct interfaces to vehicle data. However, Tesla has deliberately opted for the standard solution.

This implementation ensures that Tesla's own functions, such as navigation, cameras, and vehicle control, continue to run directly through the Tesla interface. At the same time, iPhone apps like Maps, Music, and Messaging are available via the CarPlay window.

Why Tesla is taking this step

The change in strategy is likely primarily a reaction to market and customer expectations. Many potential buyers cited the lack of Apple CarPlay as a reason for deciding against a Tesla model. The system has become industry-wide, and most manufacturers now include CarPlay as a standard feature.

This integration could strengthen Tesla's selling points, especially in an increasingly competitive market. The decision also demonstrates Tesla's willingness to adapt its existing approach if customer demands change significantly.
