With the update to tvOS 26.2, Apple introduces two practical new features for Apple TV 4K. Following improvements to user profiles in tvOS 26 last fall, Apple takes things a step further with this version. The changes aim to simplify profile management and improve control over displayed content.

Previously, creating and managing profiles on Apple TV was tightly tied to the Apple ecosystem. Anyone wanting to set up an additional profile always needed a separate Apple account – whether for a family member, roommate, or guest. This limitation caused unnecessary hassle in many households. With tvOS 26.2, the system becomes significantly more flexible. At the same time, a new feature is being added that is particularly interesting for families with children: content restrictions within the Apple TV app.

Profiles without an Apple account

One of the most noticeable changes in tvOS 26.2 concerns user profiles. For the first time, profiles can now be created without an Apple account. This eliminates the previous requirement that each profile had to be linked to an Apple ID.

Previously, profiles were primarily intended for use within Family Sharing groups. Apple assumed that everyone in the household had their own account and were connected through this structure. However, this was inconvenient for many users – especially when creating a profile for someone who didn't have their own Apple account.

With the new update, this is significantly easier. In the Settings app, under "Profiles," a new profile can now be created by entering a name. Additionally, a content rating can be set, and it can be specified whether it's a child profile. This makes profile management on Apple TV similar to familiar systems like Netflix or Disney+, where a separate account isn't required to use a personal profile.

Content restrictions in the TV app

The second new feature in tvOS 26.2 concerns the Apple TV app itself. When a child profile is active, only content that corresponds to the defined age ratings will be displayed. This gives Apple better control over what is visible on the TV.

The ratings are based on familiar systems like TV-Y, TV-Y7, and other common age ratings. This means the Apple TV app automatically filters content suitable for the age of the active profile. Parents or guardians no longer need to manually check which shows are available – the system handles this automatically based on the profile settings.

The new restrictions apply within the Apple TV app, meaning to content available through Apple's own platform. Content from third-party apps will continue to be subject to their own parental controls and filters.

A step towards greater flexibility

With tvOS 26.2, Apple has significantly simplified the management of user profiles on the Apple TV 4K. The ability to create profiles without an Apple account lowers the barrier to entry for many users and makes the feature more practical for everyday use. At the same time, the new parental controls in the TV app improve content control without requiring additional settings.

Both changes demonstrate Apple's increasing focus on practical and family-friendly features. While previous updates primarily delivered behind-the-scenes technical improvements, tvOS 26.2 clearly aims for a better user experience – especially in multi-person households.

tvOS 26.2 makes Apple TV more flexible and family-friendly.

tvOS 26.2 may not seem like a major update at first glance, but it brings two useful new features that noticeably simplify using Apple TV. Profiles can now be created without an Apple account, making the system more flexible and accessible. Additionally, the new content restrictions in the TV app provide greater security for children's profiles. This makes the Apple TV 4K more versatile, convenient, and family-friendly – exactly the step many users have been waiting for.
