Apple's MLS contract is changing sooner and more significantly than expected. A new report reveals that the partnership will not run until 2032 as originally planned, but will end in 2029. Simultaneously, there are adjustments to the payment model, cancellation options, and the MLS league calendar. These changes come directly after Apple's decision to include all MLS games in its Apple TV subscription at no additional cost.

The partnership between Apple and Major League Soccer is one of the most important streaming deals in US sports. Since its launch in 2023, a long-term plan has been in place. However, the announcements surrounding Apple TV and the discontinuation of the MLS Season Pass have triggered significant changes behind the scenes. A report from Sportico reveals concrete details for the first time: adjusted payouts, new timelines, an earlier contract end date, and altered roles for both partners starting in 2026.

Apple shortens the MLS contract to 2029

According to Sportico, the streaming partnership between Apple and MLS will now end three and a half years earlier than originally agreed. It was initially planned to run from 2023 to 2032, but the new end date is 2029. This change is related to MLS's decision to switch to Apple TV in 2026 and to restructure the league calendar starting in 2027. Several people involved have confirmed the adjustments but remain anonymous due to confidentiality.

New financial structure from 2026

MLS will adopt a revised payment model, implemented in several phases. For the 2026 season, which will still follow the old calendar, $200 million will be allocated. The following 2027 season, planned as a shortened "sprint" season, will receive $107.5 million. Payments will then increase to $275 million each for the 2027-28 and 2028-29 seasons.

These new terms are more favorable than previous agreements. The report states that MLS will receive approximately $50 million more through June 2029 than stipulated in the original contract. MLS owners were informed of the new details during a league meeting in Florida.

Apple is foregoing the cancellation option.

The original contract stipulated that Apple could withdraw after the 2027 season. This option will not be exercised. Apple will therefore remain contractually bound until the new end date of 2029. Despite the earlier termination, this adjustment creates a stable foundation for the coming years without closing the door to future renegotiations.

More flexibility for Apple and the MLS

Sportico points out that the contract reduction does not necessarily mean the end of the partnership. Both sides retain the option to renegotiate from 2029 onwards. Interest in MLS could increase significantly, especially after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in the USA, Mexico, and Canada. The data collected on viewership trends, market behavior, and reach will allow the league to better assess which models are economically and strategically viable.

Apple TV instead of MLS Season Pass

A key trigger for the new contract terms is Apple's decision to integrate all MLS games into the Apple TV subscription at no extra cost. The elimination of the separate MLS Season Pass significantly alters the business model. A broader, more easily accessible offering should increase reach and attract new viewer groups. At the same time, Apple is strengthening its streaming portfolio in an industry where market structures and user behavior are rapidly changing.

New dynamics in the relationship between Apple and the MLS

The revised MLS contract demonstrates the flexibility and dynamism of the partnership between Apple and the league. The earlier end date, the new payment structure, and the removal of the termination option create clear parameters until 2029 without creating long-term constraints. With the 2026 World Cup and the anticipated growth spurt in the North American soccer market in mind, this flexibility should benefit both sides. The coming years will be crucial in determining how the collaboration evolves and whether a new chapter between Apple and MLS begins after 2029. (Image: Apple)
