The iPhone vibrates, but there's no call, no message, no notification – simply nothing. This phantom vibration is one of the most discussed iPhone problems in Apple forums and occurs with all models. The causes range from hidden app notifications and faulty Bluetooth connections to software bugs after iOS updates. This article systematically shows where the problem lies and how to fix it.

The inexplicable vibration is particularly annoying because there seems to be no trigger. The iPhone lies on the table, buzzes briefly, and displays no notification whatsoever. Anyone who reaches for the device every time will eventually lose faith in genuine notifications – and end up missing the important ones.

In most cases, the vibration isn't random, but has a hidden cause: an app triggering a notification in the background, a Bluetooth device connecting, or a system function like location services. The following sections go through every possible trigger – from the most common to the rarest.

iPhone vibrates for no Reason: Hidden App Notifications

The most common cause of phantom vibrations is apps that send notifications without them being visible on the lock screen or in the notification center. This happens when an app is configured to vibrate but not display any banners or alerts.

Go to Settings > Notifications and check each app individually. Apps like email, calendar, reminders, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and games are particularly suspicious. For each app, check if "Allow notifications" is enabled and what alert options are set. As a test, completely disable notifications for suspicious apps and see if the vibration stops.

A common culprit is location-based games like Pokémon GO. These apps trigger vibrations in the background, even when they're not actively open – for example, when a Pokémon appears nearby. Setting location permission for such apps to "Never" or "While using the app" can solve the problem immediately.

Email Notifications

Email apps are a particularly frequent cause because they often retrieve new messages in the background, triggering a vibration without displaying a visible notification on the lock screen.

Check the notification settings under Settings > Notifications > Mail. As a test, completely disable notifications for the email account. If the vibration stops after that, configure the notifications specifically so that banners are only displayed when vibration is also desired.

System Haptics and Keyboard Vibration

iOS offers several vibration sources that are easily overlooked.

System Haptics

System haptics generates short vibrations during actions such as switching settings, scrolling through navigation wheels, or pressing certain buttons. The "System haptics" option can be deactivated under Settings > Sounds & Haptics. This disables all haptic feedback not related to calls or notifications.

Keyboard feedback

Since iOS 16, there has been haptic keyboard feedback that produces a short vibration with each keystroke. If this feature has been accidentally activated, it can be deactivated under Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Keyboard Feedback > Haptics.

Completely disable Vibration (test)

To narrow down the problem, you can temporarily turn off vibration completely: Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Turn off vibration. If the iPhone no longer vibrates afterward, the cause is definitely a software setting and not a hardware issue. Then re-enable vibration and systematically check each trigger.

Bluetooth Connections

Bluetooth devices can trigger vibrations without the user noticing. If a connected device – such as an Apple Watch, AirPods, or a fitness tracker – briefly disconnects and reconnects, the iPhone may respond with a vibration.

As a test, completely disable Bluetooth under Settings > Bluetooth and observe whether the vibrations stop. If so, re-pair the connected devices one by one to identify the cause.

Even NFC-enabled cards in a phone case – such as debit cards or access cards – can trigger brief NFC interactions and thus vibrations with certain movements. Try removing the cards from the case as a test.

Location Services and Tracking

Several users in the Apple Community report that the unexplained vibrations are related to location requests by system services. A short vibration can be triggered each time the iPhone updates its location.

Under Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services, check which services frequently request your location. There you can disable individual services such as "Location-Based Alerts" or "Location-Based Apple Ads".

Tracking notifications can also cause vibrations. Check under Settings > Notifications to see if tracking notifications are enabled and disable them if necessary.

Vibration during charging

If your iPhone vibrates only while charging, the charging cable or power adapter is almost always the cause. A loose connection in the cable or a dirty charging port causes the connection between the cable and the iPhone to be constantly interrupted and re-established. With each new connection, the iPhone vibrates briefly to confirm the charging process.

Try a different cable. Check the charging port with a flashlight and carefully clean it with a wooden toothpick if it's dirty. For more information on cleaning and troubleshooting charging issues, see our article iPhone charges slowly: causes and solutions.

Software bug after iOS Update

Following a major iOS update, reports of unexplained vibrations are increasing in Apple forums. These are often temporary software bugs that Apple fixes in point updates.

As a first step, restart the iPhone: Press and hold the side button and a volume button, slide the power off switch, wait 30 seconds and turn it back on.

If restarting doesn't help: Check under Settings > General > Software Update to see if a new iOS version is available. Apple often fixes such bugs within a few weeks. For update problems, see our article iPhone Update Problems: All Solutions under iOS 26.

Reset all settings

If none of the targeted solutions resolve the problem, resetting all settings may help. This will restore all system settings to their default values – including Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, notification settings, and vibration configurations. Personal data such as photos, apps, and messages will be retained.

Settings > General > Transfer/Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings.

After the reset, you'll need to re-enter your Wi-Fi passwords and re-pair your Bluetooth devices. In many cases, the phantom vibrations will then disappear completely, as incorrect settings combinations are eliminated. Our article Resetting your iPhone: All reset methods under iOS 26 explains all the reset options.

iPhone vibrates for no Reason: How to identify a Hardware Defect

If the iPhone continues to vibrate for no reason even after a complete settings reset, a restart and the deactivation of all vibration sources – or even vibrates when switched off – there is probably a defect in the vibration motor (Taptic Engine).

In this case, schedule an appointment at an Apple Store or an authorized Apple Service Provider. Before your visit, completely disable vibration under Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Vibration to document whether the vibration continues – this will help the technician with the diagnosis. Frequently Asked Questions: iPhone vibrates for no Reason

Why is my iPhone vibrating without a notification?

The most common cause is hidden app notifications – apps that are allowed to vibrate but don't display visible banners. Check each app individually under Settings > Notifications. Email, games with location services, and social media apps are particularly suspect.

How can I turn off all vibrations on my iPhone?

Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Disable vibration. This completely turns off all vibrations – useful for testing whether the problem is software or hardware-related.

Can Bluetooth cause phantom vibrations?

Yes. If a connected device like AirPods or an Apple Watch briefly disconnects and reconnects, the iPhone can vibrate. NFC-enabled cards in the phone case can also trigger vibrations.

Why does my iPhone only vibrate when charging?

A loose connection in the charging cable or a dirty charging port will cause the connection to constantly drop and reconnect. The iPhone will vibrate briefly with each new connection. Try a different cable and clean the port.

Will restarting the device help with unexplained vibrations?

Often, yes. A restart ends all running processes and can fix temporary software errors. If that doesn't help, check under Settings > General > Software Update to see if a new iOS version is available.

What to do if nothing else works?

To reset all settings: Settings > General > Transfer/Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings. Personal data will be retained. If the iPhone continues to vibrate after this, there may be a defect in the vibration motor – in this case, contact Apple Support.

Can Pokémon GO make the iPhone vibrate in the background?

Yes. If location permission is set to "Always," Pokémon GO can trigger vibrations even when the app is closed. Set location permission to "While Using the App" or "Never."
