With iOS 26, Apple has released a major update for FaceTime. In addition to a new user interface, it adds features that make video calls more convenient, clearer, and more secure. Live translation breaks down language barriers, new filter options filter out unwanted calls, and additional security features protect against sensitive content.

The new features in FaceTime in iOS 26 are part of a comprehensive overhaul of Apple's communication apps. The goal: a clearer structure, more features, and a higher level of privacy. The update affects not only the look but also the functionality, which is expanded with Apple Intelligence and machine learning directly on the device.

Live translation in FaceTime

FaceTime supports Live Translation in iOS 26. It works on devices with Apple Intelligence support and allows video calls with people who speak a different language. During the call, subtitles are displayed in real time and automatically translated into your own language. Replies can also be translated into the language of the other person if they are also using a compatible device with iOS 26, iPadOS 26, or macOS 26. The feature requires the download of appropriate language packs and is currently limited to English, French, German, Portuguese (Brazil), and Spanish (Spain). It is activated during a FaceTime call by clicking the button with the three dots followed by the "Live Translation" option. The source and target languages can be selected there. To end the call, use the "Stop" button.

New user interface

The user interface in FaceTime has been completely redesigned. Instead of a simple list of names, a card view now appears, showing a full picture of the contact, if available. Received video messages automatically play in the background to create an animated impression. Tapping a card starts either a FaceTime audio or a FaceTime video call, depending on the last interaction. Long-pressing a card displays the option to delete it. The New Call button is now located at the bottom of the app, while filter options are accessible via the menu in the top right. During a call, the control buttons are located in the bottom right of the display. Like all other Apple apps, FaceTime now uses the Liquid Glass design with rounded corners and glass-like buttons.

Call filter

iOS 26 introduces new call filtering options in FaceTime. The existing "Mute Unknown Callers" feature remains, and there's also an "Unknown Callers" list for missed calls and voicemails from unsaved numbers. Calls identified as spam are automatically placed in a separate spam list. Filtering is optional and can be turned on or off in the settings under "FaceTime > Call Filtering." In the app itself, the filtered areas are accessible via the menu button in the top right corner. These include "Calls," "Missed Calls," "Video," "Voicemail," "Unknown Callers," and "Spam."

Protection against sensitive content

With iOS 26, the "Sensitive Content Warning" and "Communication Safety" features are also being introduced for FaceTime video calls. If the system detects nudity, the video is paused and a warning is displayed. Communication Safety is enabled by default for accounts of children and teens under 18, but can also be used by adults. Sensitive Content Warnings are an optional feature that can be enabled regardless of age. Both options use machine learning directly on the device. Apple does not receive a notification and has no access to photos or videos. Settings can be found in the "Privacy and Security" section, and for Communication Safety, in the "Screen Time" section.

FaceTime on iOS 26: An all-around improved experience

iOS 26 makes FaceTime more modern, secure, and versatile. Live translation ensures smooth conversations despite different languages, the redesigned interface provides more clarity, and the new call filters provide additional control. Combined with the enhanced security features, this creates an all-around improved app that's perfectly equipped for both personal and professional video calls.
