Apple is planning its own smart glasses to compete with Meta's Ray-Bans. The glasses aren't a standalone device, but rather an accessory for the iPhone—similar to the Apple Watch or AirPods. The focus will be on cameras, microphones, sensors, and AI features. The initial version won't have a display. Instead, the focus will be on practical everyday use.

For years, there has been speculation that Apple is working on AR glasses. The company has already introduced a high-end augmented reality headset, the Vision Pro, but everyday glasses aren't yet technically feasible. The next step, therefore, is lightweight smart glasses without a display that integrate seamlessly into the Apple ecosystem. They are intended to complement the iPhone and bring initial AI functions into the field of vision without appearing too futuristic.

Apple is opting for a modular design with various frame and material options. Plastic and metal frames are planned, available in several colors. Buyers will be able to choose between standard and sunglasses lenses. Prescription lenses are also expected to be supported. Apple will likely use the existing Vision Pro system, for which Zeiss supplies custom-made lenses. Apple is also reportedly testing 3D printing for the frames. This should create precise and lightweight models that can be worn like regular glasses.

Technical Equipment

The Apple Smart Glasses are equipped with cameras, microphones, speakers, and sensors. A small LED light indicates when the camera is active – similar to the Meta Ray-Ban. Control is via touch gestures, for example, tapping to take a photo. Voice control is also supported, for example, for music, navigation, or controlling the camera.

Artificial intelligence as a core function

The glasses' cameras provide information to an AI assistant. This assistant can recognize what's in the field of view and provide appropriate responses. The concept is similar to the "Visual Intelligence" feature on the iPhone, except that the glasses constantly interact with the environment. The AI can be controlled via voice or touch and performs tasks such as taking photos, retrieving information, or playing music.

Market launch and price

A specific release date has not yet been set. Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman believes a market launch in 2026 is possible, while Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts a 2027 launch. There is no official price information yet. The Meta Ray-Bans cost around $300, so Apple is expected to position their glasses somewhere between the AirPods and the Apple Watch—that is, between approximately €250 and €500.

Competition from meta

The main competitors are Meta's smart glasses. The current generation of Ray-Ban glasses is successful, also through collaborations with well-known brands such as Ray-Ban and Oakley. Meta offers classic eyewear models with integrated cameras and microphones, AI functions, and touch controls. Apple will have to position itself in this environment through better iOS integration and a stronger focus on privacy.

Future perspective

The first version of Apple Smart Glasses will not feature an AR display. However, a later generation is expected to offer augmented reality features that overlay digital content directly in the field of view. Apple is working on this vision long-term, but for now, functionality, everyday usability, and a simpler design are the top priorities.
