The first AirPods Max launched in late 2020. Since then, there hasn't been a true second generation—only a minor update with USB-C in 2024. But according to various reports, Apple is working on a new model, the AirPods Max 2. The successor is expected to address many of the shortcomings of the first version and bring several new features. Find out what's planned and when you can expect the market launch here.

The AirPods Max garnered a lot of attention when they were first launched – for their design, sound quality, and active noise cancellation. At the same time, they were criticized for their heavy weight and their nearly €600 price tag. A lot has changed in the headphone market since then. Apple has delivered minor updates, but a significant development is still pending. Now there are reliable indications that this will soon change. Here's an overview of the most important information about the AirPods Max 2.

Lighter design planned

A common criticism of the AirPods Max was their weight. They're comparatively heavy for over-ear headphones, which can be uncomfortable when worn for extended periods. According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is working on a lighter design for the AirPods Max 2. Whether this will be achieved through minor adjustments or a completely new design is not yet clear. One thing is certain, however: The goal is to reduce weight—and thus increase comfort.

New H3 chip to come

Apple currently uses the H1 chip in its current model, which is now outdated. With the introduction of the AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4, Apple has showcased many new audio features based on the more modern H2 chip—for example, personalized 3D audio, Adaptive Transparency Mode, and better power management. The AirPods Max 2 are expected to feature an H3 chip, which will likely also be used in the AirPods Pro 3. This would finally bring the new model up to date with the latest technology.

Release not before 2027

Those waiting for the AirPods Max 2 will need patience. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple doesn't plan to start mass production of the new generation until 2027. This means the release won't happen for at least two years. Apple typically launches new AirPods in the fall—so it's likely that the AirPods Max 2 won't be released until fall 2027 at the earliest. Until then, Apple will continue to support the current model. The recently released USB-C version alone received three software updates, suggesting that Apple intends to support the first model even longer.

Is it still worth buying the current AirPods Max?

If you're currently considering buying AirPods Max, it's not necessarily a bad decision. The AirPods Max 2 aren't expected for a few years, and the current model continues to receive updates. The new USB-C version recently received several new features via software, showing that Apple isn't neglecting the device. The AirPods Max are currently available on Amazon for €509 . However, if you value the latest technology and a lighter design, you should keep an eye on the AirPods Max 2—even if the launch is still a long way off.

AirPods Max 2: More power, less weight – but not until 2027

According to current rumors, the AirPods Max 2 will be lighter, more powerful, and equipped with a new chip. Apple is expected to use the H3 chip, which offers more features and improved performance. However, the market launch isn't planned until 2027. Until then, the current model will remain relevant—especially thanks to the new USB-C version and regular software updates.
