Apple today released the fourth beta of iOS 27.2 to developers. This marks the fourth round of testing, even though the final version is already within reach. A look at the previous builds reveals what features will actually be included in the update.
The fourth test build follows the third beta of iOS 27.2 from October 5th. At the same time, Apple released the fourth betas of iPadOS 27.2, macOS 27.2, watchOS 27.2, tvOS 27.2, and visionOS 27.2. The new builds are listed in Apple's developer release notes and can be downloaded via the respective device's software update, provided developer betas are enabled.
The 27.2 series received most of its visible new features in the first beta. Since then, the test versions have primarily provided bug fixes and code hints for features that will only be implemented later. All information about the system is compiled in the iOS 27 overview.
Key Facts at a Glance
- Apple is distributing the fourth developer beta of iOS 27.2, along with betas for iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS and visionOS.
- The new Health app is currently being tested, but according to Apple it is not part of the final iOS 27.2.
- Apple is testing Siri AI in the 27.2 series in French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish – German is not included.
- The code of the previous betas includes features such as AI shortcuts, a redesigned reading view in Apple Books, and proximity control for home accessories.
- With iOS 27.2, a new tracking query will become mandatory in Germany and four other EU countries.
What's included in the 27.2 series under test
The first beta brought several visible changes, which will continue in subsequent test versions. The biggest change concerns the new Health app: According to Apple's developer notes, it will not be part of the final iOS 27.2, but will follow later this year, initially in US English.
The Apple TV app on the iPhone will receive profiles, including child profiles, with age ratings based on German ratings. Additionally, Siri AI will be available in five more languages; previously, it only ran in US English.
What's in the code of the previous betas
In addition to the active features, the previous test versions have contained a whole series of clues: code findings related to Shortcuts and Apple Music, a redesigned reading view in Apple Books, a filter for Messages suggestions, and most recently proximity-based control for Home accessories.
Such discoveries are not finished features. They lie dormant in the system and show what Apple is working on – not what will appear in the final version.
The betas for iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV and Vision Pro
The version numbers are consistent across all systems: iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS are all currently being tested with version 27.2. On Apple TV, the code is already preparing Apple Intelligence, and watchOS 27.2 features a new screenshot preview.
The Apple Watch has its own set of rules. A watchOS beta requires a paired iPhone with the corresponding iOS beta, and an installed watchOS beta cannot be downgraded to an older version. The watch therefore remains in the beta branch until the next final version is released.
A fourth round was not a given
Point updates are shorter than major generation updates, and with iOS 26.2, Apple skipped the fourth beta last December and went directly to the release candidate. A fourth beta version pushes the schedule back by about a week. I expect the release candidate the following week and the final version 27.2 in the last week of October.
For German-speaking users, the Siri extension offers no benefit in this test series because German is not among the five new languages. More significant is the new tracking request, which will be mandatory in five EU countries, including Germany. In Austria, the app provider decides whether to implement it; Switzerland is not included.
The beta is installed via the developer options in Software Update. Like any test version, it should be installed on a secondary device, not on your everyday iPhone.
iOS 27.2: Here's what's next
After the fourth beta, the release candidate typically follows, which, apart from final corrections, is identical to the finished version. When the update will be released and what it will bring depends on the further progress of the testing series. According to Apple's developer guidelines, the new Health app will remain outside the final iOS 27.2 release and will follow later this year.
