Suggestions in the Messages app are back – and with them, the question of how much of it you actually want to see. The third beta of iOS 27.2 contains code for new settings that allow you to filter suggestions by type. One version is even supposed to do this automatically.

The new settings were discovered by developer pdfu, who presented them on X from the code of Beta 3. The third beta of iOS 27.2 has been available to developers since October 5th. The options are not yet active in the beta.

The suggestions themselves are among the two features that were missing at the launch of iOS 27 and, according to Apple, would be included in a later update. They are back in the iOS 27.2 beta, making this update the obvious candidate – the current version of the feature can be found in the iOS 27.2 overview.

Key Facts at a Glance

  • The code of iOS 27.2 Beta 3 contains settings that should allow users to disable suggestions in messages by type.
  • A second option will automatically hide species that have not been used in the past 30 days.
  • The settings are not yet active in the beta version.
  • The suggestions can already be completely switched off today under Settings → Siri → Suggestions → Messages.
  • According to Apple's German iOS 27 page, the suggestions are initially only available in English.

What the proposals in news do

The Messages app uses Apple Intelligence to recognize when a request is made in a chat and displays relevant buttons below the message. If someone asks to go shopping, the app offers to add the item to Reminders or Notes. If someone asks for specific photos, a tap takes you directly to a search in your photo library.

The suggestions feature was already included in the summer beta of iOS 27, but was withdrawn before release. One point of criticism in the tests was that suggestions appeared in conversations even without any apparent reason.

Two ways to hide suggestions

It's already possible to completely disable suggestions. On my iPhone with the iOS 27.2 beta, the switch is located under Settings → Siri → Suggestions → Messages. However, this only works on an all-or-nothing basis.

The settings found, however, offer two more granular options. The first allows suggestions to be individually deactivated for each category – for example, those who don't want to create notes from chats will still retain the reminders. The second option is designed to have the system monitor which types are actually used and hide categories that have remained unused in the past 30 days.

These options are taken from the code and are not yet enabled in the beta. This confirms that Apple is preparing them – not that they will appear in this form in the final version.

What this means in this country

Users of German-language iPhones will not see the suggestions for now: According to Apple's German iOS 27 page, they are initially only available in English. For German-speaking users, the new filters will only be relevant once Apple expands the suggestions to German or the device is set to English.

The guide to Apple Intelligence in the Messages app shows how the other AI functions can already be used today. This is based on the current iOS 27 generation, in which Apple is equipping the Messages app with AI in several areas.

A filter instead of an on/off switch

I think this is the right approach. Suggestions aren't a feature you either love or hate – a reminder from the family chat can be useful, while a suggested note in the same conversation is just a nuisance. A filter based on type works better than a toggle switch that shows everything or nothing.

The automatic option is the more interesting of the two. It saves users the work, but assumes that 30 days of inactivity is a reliable indicator. Those who only need a feature occasionally, such as searching for photos before a vacation, might lose it precisely when they need it most.

Which suggestions would you keep and which would you disable first? Tell us in the comments how you handle it in your chats.
