Apple is working on two new updates scheduled for release in September: iOS 18.7 and iOS 26. While iOS 18.7 primarily brings minor adjustments for older devices, iOS 26 marks the next major step in development. Both versions are part of Apple's strategy to support older iPhones for as long as possible while clearly prioritizing the more modern device generation.

The clues about the upcoming updates come from MacRumors ' visitor logs. iOS 18.7 has already been spotted there. Apple is preparing to roll out the update to compatible devices. At the same time, iOS 26 is approaching, scheduled for release in mid-September after months of beta testing. This means that both users of older iPhones and owners of newer models can look forward to important software updates.

iOS 18.7: Final updates for older iPhones

With iOS 18.7, Apple will primarily close security vulnerabilities and improve system stability. No new features are planned. For models like the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR, this update represents one of the last updates they will ever receive. These devices are no longer compatible with iOS 26, thus reaching the end of their software lifespan.

iOS 26: The big leap for new devices

iOS 26 is aimed exclusively at the iPhone 11 and all newer models. After a long beta testing phase, the final release is now imminent. Release is expected in mid-September. The update brings extensive improvements, new features, and deeper system optimizations. With it, Apple continues its tradition of equipping the latest iPhones with innovative features, while older devices still receive updates but are no longer part of the latest development stage.

Apple's strategy at a glance

This approach clearly demonstrates how Apple maintains its product lines. On the one hand, older iPhones are being secured again with iOS 18.7, so that users of these devices remain protected, at least for a while. On the other hand, the focus is on iOS 26, which marks the path to the future and runs exclusively on the more modern models.

iOS 18.7 as a farewell, iOS 26 as a departure

Apple is deliberately positioning iOS 18.7 and iOS 26 as a dual strategy. On the one hand, they provide security and stability for older devices, and on the other, they offer a future-oriented update with new features for the current iPhone generation. For the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR, one era is coming to an end, while iOS 26 begins the next. The launch will take place in mid-September – and with it, the next chapter in the history of Apple and the iPhone begins. Time for fresh accessories?
