Siri AI has been available to everyone since mid-September, officially still in beta. The new system now understands six languages and is available on five platforms. However, it remains blocked on iPhones in Germany and Austria, and German is not on any list of supported languages.

Apple unveiled Siri AI as a completely rebuilt assistant at WWDC in June and released it with iOS 27 on September 14. Since then, the status has changed several times: the 27.2 updates added five more languages, Apple TV 4K was added as a new platform, and the EU block remains in place. This overview is based on Apple's page on Apple Intelligence and Siri, as well as the support document "How to get Siri AI" from October 22.

Siri AI is part of the next generation of Apple Intelligence and replaces the old Siri, which was limited to short commands. All articles on this topic are compiled on the Siri AI page.

Key Facts at a Glance

  • Siri AI is running as a beta on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, watchOS 27 and visionOS 27, and since tvOS 27.2 also on Apple TV 4K.
  • English, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish are supported. There are no scheduled dates for German.
  • Siri AI is not available on iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch in the EU. It can be used on Mac and Vision Pro in these countries, and in Switzerland additionally on iPhone.
  • A device with Apple Intelligence is required; for iPhones, this is the iPhone 15 Pro or later. Customizable voices require at least 12 GB of RAM.
  • Siri AI is free, but subject to daily usage limits. Apple plans to offer extended access for a fee in the future.

What Siri AI can do

Apple describes Siri AI as an assistant for open questions, brainstorming, and conversations with follow-up questions. Typing or speaking is done in natural language, and multiple requests can be combined into a single query. Its functionality is based on four capabilities.

Personal Context

Siri AI searches messages, emails, calendars, notes, reminders, and photos and understands their content. This allows you to ask for a photo from years ago, an email deep in your inbox, or a saved note, without having to open the corresponding app yourself.

World Knowledge

For questions on almost any topic, Siri AI accesses current information from the web. Apple cites facts, recipes, and travel recommendations as typical examples. This is based on Apple's Foundation Models, which are built on the technology behind Google's Gemini models.

Screen content

Siri AI recognizes what is currently displayed and answers questions about it. On the iPhone, this is complemented by the new Siri mode in the camera app; on iPhone and iPad, it's the screenshot gesture; and on Mac, a keyboard shortcut. On the Vision Pro, simply looking at an object is enough to ask about it. According to Apple, the visual intelligence on iPad, Mac, and Vision Pro requires the device language to be set to English.

App Actions

Siri AI performs tasks directly within apps, such as Messages, Music, and Reminders, according to Apple. This allows users to edit a recently sent message, create an appointment, or add a song from their car radio to their workout playlist.

Siri app, writing and voices

For the first time, there's a dedicated Siri app. The app collects all conversations and synchronizes them via iCloud between iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro. A conversation started on the iPhone can thus be continued on the Mac, and important conversations can be pinned.

With "Type with Siri," Siri AI creates texts based on descriptions almost anywhere you type, revises what you've written, or provides feedback. In messages and emails, the system can optionally adopt your writing style, punctuation, and tone.

The voice can be selected and adjusted in terms of intensity and speed. This requires Apple's larger on-device model, which only runs on devices with at least 12 GB of RAM. This also applies to the iPhone 17, which is why it lacks two Siri functions.

Which Devices Siri AI Runs On

Siri AI requires a device with Apple Intelligence. For iPhones, this includes the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, all models from the iPhone 16 series onward, the iPhone Air, and the iPhone Duo. On the Apple Watch, Siri AI works with Series 9, Ultra 2, and SE 3 and later, but only with a paired iPhone that has Siri AI enabled.

Siri AI was added to the Apple TV 4K with tvOS 27.2, and is supported on models from the second generation onwards. On the TV, Siri AI is currently limited to English and eight countries; Germany, Austria, and Switzerland are not among them. The same applies to the HomePod mini 2: Anyone managing their home in the Home app needs an iPhone or iPad with Siri AI enabled.

Siri AI is also available in CarPlay while on the go, via the paired iPhone.

Languages: six out of sixteen

Apple Intelligence itself supports 16 languages, including German. Siri AI launched on September 14th in English only. French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish were added with the 27.2 update on October 26th.

StatusLanguages

announced until the end of 2026Chinese (Traditional), Norwegian, Turkish, Vietnamese
no appointment necessaryChinese (Simplified), Danish, German, Italian, Dutch, Swedish

The device language and Siri language must be set to the same supported language. Therefore, a Mac with German as the system language will not receive Siri AI, even if Apple Intelligence is running in German on it.

The language list applies to settings and voice control, not chat. In my test, Siri AI could be contacted in German without any problems when both the device and Siri language were set to English. However, Siri AI does not understand spoken requests in German.

The situation in Germany, Austria and Switzerland

Siri AI is not available in the EU on iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS. Apple justifies this with interoperability requirements, which the DMA (Digital Access Management) uses to block Siri AI on iPhones and iPads. The Apple Watch is also affected because Siri AI requires an iPhone with Assistant enabled on the watch. Therefore, Siri AI is one of the Apple features that is missing in the EU.

On Mac and Vision Pro, Siri AI can also be used with an Apple account in the EU, provided one of the six languages is selected. Switzerland is not part of the EU; there, Siri AI also runs on the iPhone, and since October 26th, it has been available in a national language in French-speaking Switzerland. Apple has not announced a date for the EU launch. According to a Bloomberg estimate from October, the iPhone launch in the EU could take until around mid-February 2027 at the earliest.

Siri AI will not launch in China for the time being. Apple states that the assistant will not function as long as the Apple account region is set to mainland China.

Power on, waiting list and limits

After the update, Siri AI can be enabled as a beta version in the Siri settings. During setup, you select a voice, record a few sentences for speech recognition, and review the privacy settings. The device then goes on a waiting list, the duration of which varies according to Apple. Once the waiting period is over, Siri AI downloads automatically.

Apple Intelligence uses up to 14 GB of storage on devices with the larger on-device model, and up to 8 GB on others. The guide Setting up Apple Intelligence explains how to enable the features. Users under 13 years of age are excluded from Siri AI.

Siri AI is free, but subject to daily usage limits because many requests are processed on Apple's servers. According to Apple, these limits depend on the function, the complexity of the request, and system load. Apple plans to offer extended access for a fee in the future, but details are not yet available. Processing takes place on the device or via Private Cloud Compute, where, according to Apple, the data is neither stored nor accessible to Apple.

A major achievement with a unique German approach

I consider Siri AI to be Apple's most important software project in years, and its range of functions justifies this. Personal context, screen content, and app actions intertwine in a way that a chatbot without system access simply cannot. However, six weeks after its launch, Siri AI remains a beta version with a waiting list and daily limits, meaning it can't be relied upon completely in everyday use.

For German users, the full package remains theoretical for now. Anyone wanting to try Siri AI today can only do so on a Mac or Vision Pro and must switch the system to English or one of the other five languages. I expect German will only be available once it's released for iPhones in the EU, as there's hardly a German-speaking market outside the EU that would support earlier delivery.

Have you already tried Siri AI on your Mac and changed the system language, or are you waiting until the assistant is available in German and on your iPhone? Let us know in the comments which language you're using Siri AI in or what's causing the problems for you.
