Perplexity is expanding its offering with an AI-powered shopping feature featuring direct PayPal checkout. The goal is a shopping experience that feels more personal, simpler, and significantly less ad-heavy. This update demonstrates how AI-based research and purchasing processes are converging and how Perplexity is clearly positioning itself against traditional search engines.

Perplexity originally developed as a dialogue-oriented search platform that delivers information in a compact and understandable format. With its new shopping feature, the service is entering a new area. Instead of ads and long lists of results, Perplexity focuses on personalized recommendations and clear product presentations. This update is the next step in seamlessly integrating digital research and shopping.

Personalized product search with Perplexity

The new shopping feature uses a dialogue-oriented search that takes previous interactions into account. Perplexity can remember search queries and understands design preferences, recurring interests, and typical purchasing patterns. This results in search results that are not simply sorted by relevance, but rather better match actual user needs.

The search results don't appear in a traditional grid, but rather as compact product cards. Each card contains specifications, ratings, and other details that would otherwise be spread across multiple pages. The goal is to enable faster, more informed decision-making without having to scroll through lengthy, cluttered lists.

According to the team, the AI understands a buyer's individual needs better than an algorithm primarily optimized for advertising revenue. Perplexity aims to create a neutral and helpful shopping experience that is more closely aligned with genuine research.

PayPal Checkout integration

A key part of the update is the direct payment function. Perplexity now supports PayPal Checkout within its own interface. Purchases can be completed without leaving the platform. This currently works with supported merchants, including Fabletics, Adorama, and NewEgg. The launch is deliberately being made with select partners to ensure a stable and user-friendly experience.

PayPal is also offering a cashback promotion. First-time users paying with PayPal via Perplexity will receive 50 percent of their purchase price back, up to a maximum of $50. This promotion aims to make it easier for users to get started and encourage them to try out the new feature.

Comparison to ChatGPT and further development

OpenAI has also integrated AI-based shopping research into ChatGPT. This puts Perplexity and ChatGPT in a similar functional area. Both platforms aim to simplify shopping using AI, but with different focuses. Perplexity focuses more on dialogue-based research without advertising pressure.

The new shopping experience is available free of charge to all US users. It works on the web and on desktop. It will be rolled out to iOS in the coming weeks. Other platforms have not yet been announced, but the current rollout speed suggests that additional devices are likely to be supported.

A glimpse into the modern shopping experience of Perplexity

With this update, Perplexity demonstrates what a modern shopping experience can look like. The combination of AI-powered product search, personalized recommendations, and direct PayPal checkout makes the process clearer and more convenient. Product cards provide all the essential information instantly, while the AI learns from previous searches, making suggestions increasingly relevant. With its ongoing cashback promotion and launch on desktop and web, Perplexity positions itself as a useful companion for anyone who wants to shop precisely and easily. This update highlights the significant role AI will play in digital commerce in the future. (Image: Shutterstock / miss.cabul)
