Signal introduces new backup models for iPhone users

Signal is expanding its features and introducing secure backups for iPhones. This adds a way to securely store messages and restore them when needed. The new backup function closes a gap that iPhone users previously had with Signal. At the same time, the platform remains committed to its focus on secure communication.

Secure backups on your iPhone

Signal now enables encrypted backups directly on the iPhone. The backups are end-to-end encrypted and can only be opened with a 64-digit recovery key. This key is generated on the device and not stored by Signal. Losing the key means that recovery is no longer possible. This feature clearly adheres to Signal's principle that users alone retain control over their data.

Free and paid backup models

Signal offers two secure backup options that differ significantly in scope.

Free backup: You can back up up to 100 MB of text messages here. This also includes photos, videos, and files from the last 45 days. This limit ensures that basic communication remains protected without requiring large storage space.
Paid backup: For $1.99 per month, a significantly larger range of features is available. This plan saves all text messages without time limits and offers up to 100 GB of storage for media. This allows you to back up older photos, videos, and files, which is particularly useful for heavy messenger users.

Enabling backups in the app

The setup process is kept simple to ensure clarity and ease of use. In the Signal app settings, you'll find the Backups section. There, you can activate the feature by selecting "Set up" and then "Activate backups." Signal will then generate a recovery key, which must be kept secure. After this step, you can choose between the free and paid plans. The app will then automatically begin creating encrypted backups.

A look at the development

Secure backups were first introduced for Android in September. With the new iPhone feature, the iOS version is now following suit. Signal also plans to make the backup function available for its desktop app. The long-term goal is to seamlessly transfer chat histories between Android, iPhone, and desktop. This should make cross-platform messaging even more flexible and secure.
