ChatGPT Atlas continues to evolve. The AI-powered browser from OpenAI, which only recently launched, has received a new update for macOS. The Mac version gains nine new features, including iCloud Passkeys, vertical tabs, and the ability to set Google as the default search engine. The update closes important gaps and makes the browser more suitable for everyday use.

ChatGPT Atlas launched last month as a browser that integrates ChatGPT's features directly into the browsing experience. Many users already saw it as an alternative to established browsers. With the latest update, OpenAI is specifically addressing the features that were previously missing. These additions are intended to make getting started easier and switching from other browsers more practical.

An AI browser that puts ChatGPT at its core.

ChatGPT Atlas is based on the approach of using AI not just as an extension, but as the core of the browser. Instead of additional plugins, ChatGPT is part of the browser from the outset. This allows for content analysis, faster task completion, and more efficient processing of web information. The focus is on a seamless interplay between browsing and AI support.

Nine new features for macOS

Adam Fry, Atlas's product manager, published an overview of the new features on X. The update is intended to address numerous practical issues that have bothered early adopters.

iCloud Passkey support

The most important new feature is the integration of iCloud Passkeys. Websites can create passkeys directly in the browser, which are then automatically saved in iCloud. Sites that convert existing accounts to passkeys also work. This improves security and reduces the effort required for logins.

Google as default search engine

Expected, yet still surprising. Google can now be set as the default search engine. This makes switching from other browsers, especially Chrome, easier. ChatGPT's AI features remain central, but web search can now be customized more flexibly.

Vertical tabs

A benefit for anyone who works with many pages open. Vertical tabs provide a better overview and make efficient use of wide displays. This feature is one of the most requested features of modern browsers and has now been integrated into Atlas.

Importing extensions

Importing extensions significantly simplifies switching between Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. Users can quickly recreate their familiar browser environment without having to reconfigure everything.

Further adjustments and improvements

The remaining features include optimizations for stability and speed, improved navigation, a redesigned settings menu, and easier handling of bookmarks and favorites. Overall, the user experience feels more polished than before.

Meaning of the update for ChatGPT Atlas

Chrome has been the undisputed standard for years. Many AI browsers have tried to challenge it, but often without lasting success. However, with this update, ChatGPT Atlas has laid a solid foundation to position itself as a serious competitor. The combination of classic browser features and direct ChatGPT integration could prove its worth in everyday use.

ChatGPT Atlas for macOS remains available for free download . This update demonstrates that OpenAI is committed to developing the browser and continuing its rapid growth.

ChatGPT Atlas: A clear step forward for the AI browser

The new update takes ChatGPT Atlas a significant step forward. Support for iCloud Passkeys, the option to choose Google as the default search engine, and the addition of practical convenience features make the browser a more well-rounded solution. For those who work extensively with ChatGPT and are looking for a fast, AI-powered browser, Atlas is an increasingly attractive alternative to Chrome and Safari. (Image: OpenAI)
