Much has been known about the device itself for months: square display, wall mount or stand, launch later this year. How it's operated, however, has remained a mystery. A look at the macOS 26.7 system files now provides some initial answers – and they are more familiar than the device's novelty might suggest.
Apple's home hub is the longest-announced unannounced product in its current lineup. Originally slated for early 2025, it was delayed due to voice control and has since surfaced in a steady stream of code snippets. The macOS 26.7 release candidate recently contained a whole series of code names for unreleased home devices, Macs, and iPads, including the abbreviation J490. Text snippets have now surfaced that describe what happens on the screen.

Widget Gallery instead of Home Screen
The key to the discovery is the file name. "Poster" is Apple's internal term for customizable screen templates – from the freely configurable lock screens since iOS 16 to the contact posters that appear for incoming calls since iOS 17. The fact that the Home Hub interface is described in a file of this family reveals its technical origin before the device has even been shown.
Specifically, the code mentions a Widget Gallery, which allows users to populate the home screen. Anyone who has ever set up a widget on an iPhone will be familiar with the process: open the selection list, choose a tile, and place it. In addition, there's a Smart Stack that automatically cycles through multiple widgets and displays what's currently relevant depending on the time of day. A Face Gallery is also mentioned, allowing users to select different clock faces. MacRumors analyzed the strings in the code of the Mac update.
It's all been done before
What's striking is how little of it is new. Every single component already exists on at least one other Apple device.

This suggests a device that doesn't create its own operating system, but rather translates the existing design language into a new format. For a product that has been delayed for years, this is a remarkably conservative approach – and at the same time the path with the least friction for everyone who already owns an iPhone.
The content is stored on the iPhone inside the house
The most interesting point concerns not the appearance, but the visibility. All residents can see the widgets that someone has set up on the home hub. However, according to the code, their content is only displayed when the linked main device is in the house. If the owner leaves the home, the tile remains empty.
This solves a problem that Amazon and Google have never satisfactorily resolved with their displays: A device on the kitchen counter is a shared device, but the appointments, messages, and notes displayed on it are not. Using the phone's presence as a switch is a simple solution – it works without logging in, switching profiles, or facial recognition.
In practical terms, this also means that people who travel a lot will more often find themselves at home looking at a device that leaves half the screen blank. Whether this rule can be disabled is not clear from the fragments.
No App Store, but with Apple apps
The device will not have its own app store. Apple applications such as Safari, Apple News, Apple Music, Notes, Calendar, Photos, and the Home app will be pre-installed; tapping a widget will open the corresponding app in full size. Widgets from third-party apps will also be possible, but only via screen mirroring from the iPhone.
For everyday use, this represents a clear boundary. Services without their own Apple app appear at best as a tile, not as a full program. Users who control their home via manufacturer software outside of Apple Home won't find it on the device. However, the ability to integrate the hub into HomeKit scenes and automations is built into the code – it's treated as an accessory like any other.
What really matters at the start
The operation is thus largely outlined, and it appears well-designed. The crucial question, however, remains: voice control. The device is designed as a voice-guided hub, and Siri AI initially starts exclusively in English. For a German-speaking household, this is precisely where its usefulness hinges – a nicely designed home screen is no substitute for an assistant that understands what is being said.
Our expectation: In Germany, the device will primarily serve as a display surface for the first six months and will only become its intended purpose once German language support is added.
