A Mac maintenance update has turned out to be the most fruitful discovery of the summer. The code contains identifiers for home devices, Macs, iPads, and a headset that many thought had been removed. Some of these are appearing for the very first time.
The macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate contains references to a number of unannounced Apple products. MacRumors discovered them while analyzing the shipped pre-release version. We've already covered two of these findings separately: the demo video for the camera AirPods and the identifiers for the AirPods 5. This article examines the rest of the list.
Key Facts at a Glance
- The code mentions two versions of the expected smart home hub: one with a stand, one for wall mounting.
- A new chip codename has surfaced for the HomePod mini.
- Also listed are an entry-level MacBook Pro, two iMac models, the next iPad mini, and a new Apple TV remote.
- The identifier N109 for a headset is back in the code, even though the associated project was considered to have been stopped.
- For home devices, the name of their own operating system appears – they thus form a separate product category.
- Several strings of characters suggest that the writing tools are coming to China.
Home devices: two designs for the central unit
The most revealing section is the home accessories category. The code mentions J490 and J491 – according to current reports, these are the smart home hubs, with the first version sitting on a stand and the second designed for wall mounting. References to Siri setup are also found for the J490. The overview of the Apple HomePad summarizes what is currently known about the device.
The HomePod mini's code points to a new chip: A component with the identifier B525 is mentioned, which is not present in the current model with the identifier B520. A device called J229 also appears, which was already noticed in the iOS code in December – described as a device with multiple sensors that can detect alarm sounds and take pictures.
In addition, there are color specifications for an unspecified home device: rose, silver, space gray, and Polaris. The code does not indicate which product is meant.
Macs, iPads and a new remote control
| Identifier | Suspected device |
|---|---|
| J804 | Entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro |
| J833, J834 | Two new iMac models |
| K114, K116 | Higher-end MacBook Pro models |
| J510, J511 | Next iPad mini generation |
| ATVRemote1.5 | New remote control for Apple TV |
The discovery regarding the iMac identifiers fits with reports of an OLED iMac with an additional protective layer. A similar situation exists for the iPad mini: a model with an OLED display and a market launch in October has been expected for weeks.
The headset, which was actually cancelled
The most interesting single find is N109. For years, this identifier stood for a second Vision Pro model, although reports were contradictory: sometimes it was described as a successor, sometimes as a cheaper version. Most recently, it was said that the display project for the cheaper version was on the verge of being scrapped.
The fact that the identifier remains in the delivered code doesn't necessarily contradict this – codenames don't automatically disappear when a project is paused. However, this finding isn't sufficient proof of a revival either. For now, both versions exist side by side.
A separate operating system, a separate billing system
The code also contains the name "Pebble." According to previous reports, this is Apple's internal designation for the operating system that will run on the home devices. This is more than just a minor detail: the central hub would therefore not be an iPad derivative, but a device with its own operating system and its own product category.
Regarding the question of what will actually reach Europe, this means one thing above all: nothing can be deduced from the iPhone situation. Apple has explicitly suspended the launch of Siri AI in the EU for iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, explaining that the Apple Watch requires a paired iPhone. However, Siri AI does run on macOS and visionOS in the EU – the background information is summarized in the DMA dispute.
It's also noteworthy that the code contains references to the writing tools used in China, including hints of content checks and temporary blocks. While regulations in Europe leave questions unanswered, Apple is working on a version in China that complies with local requirements. Two markets, two different approaches – and in both cases, the software, not the hardware, determines what the device can do.
Why a maintenance update in particular?
The fact that a small interim version contains so many identifiers is not a coincidence of timing, but a consequence of the calendar: Before an autumn with several product launches, the devices need to be prepared in terms of software before they are presented. The preview of the Apple event summarizes what is expected in September.
The order remains open. There is no date yet for the home devices and Macs, and Apple sometimes holds a second event in October or November.
Which of the mentioned devices would you be most likely to buy – the smart home hub, the new iPad mini, or one of the upcoming Macs? Let us know in the comments what you're waiting for.
