The MacBook Pro has stood for performance and high-quality displays for years. In 2026, Apple is making a major change: For the first time, the Pro models will be equipped with OLED displays. This represents an upgrade that could significantly improve both image quality and efficiency.
The MacBook Pro currently uses Mini-LED technology. This already offers good contrast and high brightness, but OLED goes a step further. The Korean website The Elec reports that Apple will switch to OLED displays for the MacBook Pro starting in 2026. Samsung Display is the exclusive supplier. With this partnership, Apple aims to usher in the next generation of its professional laptops.
Production and schedule
The new OLED displays are planned for the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. Panel production is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2026. Individual components will be produced in the first quarter. Prototypes will be produced later this year at Samsung's Gen 8 OLED A6 factory. Apple is also working to reduce the costs of certain components. Samsung has developed some new parts for this purpose. However, if these do not meet Apple's requirements, the schedule may be delayed. Initial production volume is approximately two to three million units. If necessary, Samsung can expand capacity to up to ten million units per year. The market launch of the new MacBook Pros is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026, between October and December.
Advantages of OLED technology
Compared to current Mini-LED models, OLED offers several key advantages. Displays with this technology achieve higher brightness and a significantly better contrast ratio. Black tones appear deeper because each pixel is self-illuminating and can be controlled independently. OLED panels are also more energy efficient, which can extend battery life. Furthermore, the technology enables a slimmer design because a backlight is no longer necessary. For the MacBook Pro, this represents a noticeable advancement in image quality, design, and mobility.
Challenges in implementation
Despite all the advantages, there are still hurdles to overcome. Apple must ensure that Samsung's new components meet its high standards. If there are any problems, the launch of the devices could be delayed. However, the current plans show that Apple is consistently preparing for the transition and has its sights firmly set on OLED technology.
