Apple Intelligence: China version planned with censorship

Apple is relying heavily on AI technology to make its products future-proof. While Apple Intelligence is already being integrated into the ecosystem in the US and other markets, China has so far been left out. The reason lies not only in technical challenges, but primarily in political and regulatory hurdles. Now there are indications that Apple is working on a specially adapted version to serve the Chinese market after all.

A Bloomberg report suggests that Apple plans to introduce Apple Intelligence in China by the end of 2025 at the latest. The release date is cited as a future update of iOS 26—specifically, iOS 26.1 or iOS 26.2. Apple wants to make Apple Intelligence a central reason for upgrading to new devices, especially the upcoming iPhone 17 series. Internally, the availability of AI features is considered crucial to the market success of this generation. Currently, iPhone users in China cannot access Apple Intelligence, even if the device was purchased abroad. The decisive factor is whether the Apple account is set to the China region. A version of the AI in Simplified Chinese has existed since April 2025, but is only accessible to users outside of China.

Collaboration with Baidu and Alibaba

Approval from the authorities is required for launch in China. In practice, this usually means that Apple must cooperate with a local technology company. The report names two specific companies: Baidu and Alibaba. Both companies are expected to take on different roles. Baidu is apparently responsible for implementing generative AI, comparable to ChatGPT. This includes functions such as visual intelligence, such as image recognition and image generation. Alibaba, in turn, is responsible for ensuring compliance with government regulations. This includes, among other things, content controls and filtering mechanisms that ensure that Apple Intelligence remains compliant with Chinese internet laws.

Difficult approval process

Chinese regulators are traditionally considered reluctant to approve foreign technologies, especially when it comes to artificial intelligence and data processing. The approval process is correspondingly complex. The Bloomberg report indicates that concerns aren't limited to China. US government officials have also expressed criticism, presumably regarding data protection and potential technological dependencies. Nevertheless, Apple appears determined to meet the requirements. The cooperation with Baidu and Alibaba is intended to accommodate the regulatory framework while enabling Apple Intelligence functionality in China.

Internal tests already underway

According to the report, Apple Intelligence is already being tested with Apple employees in China. The goal is to test the technology under real-world conditions while ensuring compliance with local regulations. This testing phase is a further step toward market launch. Apple is pursuing a clear strategy: The introduction of Apple Intelligence in China should not only be technologically convincing but also politically viable. The focus is less on complete functionality than on adaptation to the Chinese environment.

Apple Intelligence in China: Between Regulation and Market Strategy

Apple plans to make Apple Intelligence available in China by the end of 2025 – in a modified, censored version.
