Apple Vision Air expected to be lighter and cheaper in 2027

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is working on a new version of its mixed reality headset. The device, currently known unofficially as Vision Air, is scheduled to launch in 2027 – with a significantly lower weight and price. Compared to the current Vision Pro, these would be two key changes that could significantly facilitate access to Apple's signature XR technology.

With the Vision Pro, Apple entered the field of spatial computing in 2024. The technology is impressive, but the device is expensive, heavy, and simply not practical for everyday use for many. The Vision Pro remains a statement—but not a product for the masses. The plans for the Vision Air show that Apple is clearly charting a new course. More users, fewer barriers—without abandoning its ambition to remain technologically advanced.

Vision Air is expected to be around 40 percent lighter

The Vision Pro weighs approximately 1.375 pounds (around 624 grams). According to Kuo , the Vision Air will be over 40 percent lighter. This would mean the new headset will remain under one pound (approximately 450 grams). This will likely be made possible by a redesigned housing structure that will utilize titanium. Titanium is light, strong, and helps reduce weight without sacrificing quality. A lighter headset, above all, means more comfort—especially during extended use. This brings Apple closer to creating a device that can be worn every day without constantly putting pressure on the face and neck.

Price to drop by more than half

A key factor: the price. The current Vision Pro costs $3,499 in the US – €3,999 in Germany. Kuo expects the Vision Air to be more than 50 percent cheaper. This results in a target price of around $1,750. While still more expensive than an iPhone, this puts it in the range of a high-end MacBook or perhaps the planned foldable iPhone. Such a price would make the headset more attainable for many tech-savvy users – especially those who have so far deferred the Vision Pro due to its cost.

Technical changes to the design

In addition to the weight, the design is also expected to change. Kuo speaks of a "thinner design" and a "new battery housing." This refers not only to the outward appearance, but also to the way the device is worn and operated. Whether the battery will continue to be connected externally via a cable – as with the Vision Pro – or integrated into the headset is still unclear. However, it is likely that Apple is focusing on improved ergonomics and user-friendliness with the new version. The choice of materials – especially titanium – suggests that despite the lower price, no major compromises in workmanship are being made.

Sales forecast: More than twice as many units as the Vision Pro

Kuo expects around one million Vision Air devices to be sold by 2027. By comparison, the Vision Pro is currently expected to sell around 400,000 units. This underscores that Apple isn't just planning a niche product here, but is aiming for a significantly broader market presence. The estimate also shows that Apple clearly has confidence in the concept of a cheaper, lighter headset – and expects the mixed reality market to grow significantly in the coming years.
