Apple prüft Premium-iPad-Pro-Displays für künftige iPhones

Apple could introduce a new generation of displays in its iPhone models starting in 2028. The company is reportedly considering using so-called tandem OLED technology, which is currently used in the iPad Pro. LG Display, the global leader in this technology, is primarily behind the plans and has been trying to convince Apple of its advantages for years.

Displays are one of the most important factors for a smartphone's quality and user experience. Apple has consistently relied on OLED in recent years, but development isn't standing still. By switching to tandem OLED, Apple aims to significantly improve the lifespan and efficiency of iPhone displays. Particularly exciting is the close collaboration with LG Display, which plays a key role with hundreds of patents and technological leadership.

What Tandem OLED means

Tandem OLEDs layer two organic light-emitting layers on top of each other. This offers decisive advantages: higher brightness, a longer lifespan, and better energy efficiency compared to the single-layer OLED displays previously used in iPhones. Durability is a particularly important factor, as OLED materials are known to lose brightness over time. Apple has already used the technology in the iPad Pro with the M4 chip. Around 65 percent of the panels come from LG Display, while Samsung supplies the rest. Experience with this display generation shows that the technology also proves its worth in practice.

The role of LG Display

LG Display is a leader in tandem OLEDs. With 348 published US patent applications, the company holds the most intellectual property rights in this category. For years, LG Display has been trying to convince Apple to use tandem OLED structures for iPhones. The goal is clear: iPhone models could be equipped with this technology from 2028 onwards – a decision that ultimately rests with Apple. Interestingly, Apple is testing a simplified form of the technology for the iPhone. In this version, only the blue subpixels are arranged in two layers, while red and green remain based on a single layer. In the industry, this approach is known as "simplified tandem." It is considered more efficient because it is less complex to manufacture, but at the same time addresses the biggest weaknesses of OLED displays – particularly the stress on the blue subpixels.

Competition and production

Tandem OLED isn't exclusive to Apple. Last year, Chinese manufacturer Honor equipped its Magic6 PSR with BOE panels, also based on this technology. Should Apple actually introduce the technology for the iPhone, it could lead to bottlenecks. The reason: stacking two emission layers reduces production throughput. LG Display is therefore planning investments to expand production capacity and avoid potential problems. To secure supply and keep prices stable, Apple is expected to bring in several suppliers. In addition to LG Display, Samsung and BOE could also play a role.

Why 2028 is considered the target year

The year 2028 seems like a sensible time for such a transition. Apple has enough lead time to secure production processes while suppliers can adjust their manufacturing capacities. At the same time, the timeframe fits Apple's strategy of introducing a significant technological leap every few years to differentiate itself from the competition.

The potential introduction of tandem OLED displays starting in 2028 could significantly change the iPhone lineup. Increased brightness, longer durability, and improved energy efficiency speak for themselves. LG Display, with its patent portfolio and previous collaborations, is a strong partner, but Samsung and BOE are also likely to be involved.
