Hidden in a footnote of the iPhone 18 Pro press release, Apple has once again extended free use of its satellite services – this time also for the iPhone 16. The crucial point is a deadline that has already passed. And in Germany, the extension affects significantly fewer services than in the US.
When Apple introduced satellite connectivity with the iPhone 14 in November 2022, free access was limited to two years after activation. It hasn't expired for anyone to this day: Apple has repeatedly extended the deadline, most recently again. This information is found in the footnotes of the announcement for the iPhone 18 Pro, which was published on the day the iPhone 18 Pro was unveiled.

What exactly was extended
The wording of the footnote is narrow. The extension applies to users of an iPhone 14, iPhone 15, or iPhone 16 who activated their device before midnight Pacific Time on September 9th in a country where satellite functionality is supported. Those who activated their device later are not covered.
The iPhone 17 is not listed. This is not an oversight, but simply unnecessary. The series was released in September 2025, and with two years of free trial from activation, its validity period doesn't expire until autumn 2027 anyway – later than the now-extended validity periods of the older models.
Two years will turn into almost five
The timeline reveals a pattern. The iPhone 14 was released in fall 2022, and the free trial period was supposed to end in fall 2024. Apple postponed the date first in 2023, a second time last year, and now again. For early adopters, this means that the originally promised two years have now stretched to almost five.
The two-year support period for the iPhone 15 would have expired this year, but it applies to the iPhone 16 for the first time because its two-year period is ending now. Apple has never specified how much the services will cost after the two-year period expires.
Only a portion of it applies in this country
Apple groups four services under the term "satellite features," and their availability varies significantly by region. A look at the German-language support documents paints a sobering picture for German-speaking countries.

Of the services for which Apple has just extended the free period, practically only one is usable in this country – emergency SOS via satellite, and has been since December 2022. In Germany, 112 and 110 can be reached via this service, and in Austria additionally 133 and 144.
Satellite messaging remains limited to four countries, and roadside assistance to three. Apple cites approvals and market-specific requirements for both services and states that it is working on expanding them.
Apple's own documents are lagging behind
Anyone wishing to verify this information will still find the old deadline in the support documents. Both the overview of the satellite connection and the pages for emergency SOS and breakdown assistance still state two years from activation, last updated in July and autumn 2025 respectively. The extension is not mentioned there.
The press release is still the reliable source: it's an official company statement and therefore the stronger source. However, anyone relying on the support pages will currently be given an incorrect expiration date.
Why Apple keeps pushing back the deadline
The service runs on Globalstar's satellite network, which Amazon acquired – so Apple isn't bearing the costs solely out of goodwill. Nevertheless, there are several reasons to believe the service will be extended: an emergency call service that becomes chargeable after a certain period would require explanation, and this is doubly true for emergency services.
For you, this means practically nothing you need to do at the moment. The renewal will happen automatically, provided the device was activated in a supported country in time. Anyone who regularly travels in remote areas should run through the demo in the control center before their trip – via the cellular button and then "Satellite" – instead of trying to establish a connection for the first time in an actual situation.
