Apple has released the sixth beta of iOS 27. This reduces the gap to the September release to just a few weeks, and the cycle is entering a phase where existing features are no longer being added, but rather the existing ones are being made more robust. However, for users in Germany, the very part that actually defines the update remains unavailable.

Following the fifth beta on August 10th, Apple is releasing beta 6, continuing the testing cycle that has defined the testing phase since its launch at WWDC in June. The public launch is expected in September, alongside the new iPhones. Until then, only a few more rounds of testing and the release candidate remain – consequently, the focus is shifting away from new product announcements towards stability and bug fixes.

Key Facts at a Glance

  • Apple has released iOS 27 Beta 6 for developers and public beta participants.
  • The cycle is nearing its end: After Beta 6, only a few rounds and the Release Candidate remain.
  • The public release is expected in September, coinciding with the new iPhone generation.
  • Siri AI is blocked on iPhone and iPad in the EU by the Digital Markets Act – Switzerland is exempt as a non-EU country.
  • Betas should still be installed on a secondary device with a prior backup, not on the main device.

Where iOS 27 stands in the beta cycle

iOS 27 rests on three pillars: the completely revamped Siri AI assistant, expanded parental controls and screen time features, and a broad optimization of speed and usability across the entire system. These principles have been established since WWDC and will not change in the final stages of development.

What's changing is the way the work is being done. Early betas introduced new features and redesigned icons, most recently in beta 5. From beta 6 onward, however, the focus is on bug fixes, performance improvements, and integration with third-party apps. Apple details the specific changes included in each beta version in the official iOS 27 release notes.

The schedule until September

Apple hasn't announced a release date for either the Release Candidate or the final version. However, the process has followed the same pattern for years: The Release Candidate appears around the time of the September keynote, and the final version follows shortly after, alongside the new iPhones. Applied to this cycle, this means one or two more betas before the testing phase transitions into the Release Candidate.

Anyone who runs the beta on a second device until then will reach the final version without an intermediate step – the release candidate usually already corresponds to it.

The DMA hook remains

For users in Germany and Austria, even Beta 6 doesn't change the central limitation: Siri AI is blocked on iPhones and iPads in the EU due to the Digital Markets Act. This defining feature of iOS 27 is therefore missing at launch. Apple's decision to hold back the assistant is due to the interoperability requirements of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) – and joins a long list of features that will arrive later or not at all in these regions.

Switzerland is on the other side. It belongs neither to the EU nor the EEA and is not covered by the DMA – Siri AI is available there and is already running in beta. Thus, a dividing line runs between Zurich and Munich that has nothing to do with the hardware.

Anyone who should still install the beta now

Later betas are considered more stable than the early rounds, but they are still not a replacement for the final version. Bugs, increased battery consumption, and individual apps that don't yet run smoothly are to be expected until the very end. Therefore, testing on a secondary device and only after a complete backup is recommended. Those who want to start without a developer account can find the steps, including backup and reverting, in the guide for installing the public iOS beta.

One argument against starting now is that those who only begin now will only have a few weeks to test and will still bear the full beta risk.

What the update will bring to Germany

The beta test results suggest a planned September release – that's the good news. However, for iPhones in Germany and Austria, iOS 27 will be a different update at launch than in Switzerland or the US: speed, parental controls, and the redesigned apps are all there, but the AI core isn't. Anyone planning to upgrade should keep their expectations for the Siri feature low for now and judge the update based on what's actually available. This gap will remain until Apple and the EU Commission make a move on the Device Management Agreement (DMA) – and there's no sign of that happening yet.

iOS 27: Here's what's next

Before the official release, a release candidate and likely one or two further rounds of testing will follow. After that, it will become clear how much of the AI transformation actually reaches Germany and Austria – and how long the dividing line with Switzerland will last.
