A report from last weekend suggested that Apple's foldable iPhone would initially be released only in the US. A Chinese leaker disagrees. And the very account that once confirmed the name "iPhone Ultra" is now questioning it.

Four weeks before the expected September event, rumors about the foldable iPhone are intensifying – and increasingly contradictory. Last week, a report circulated about a staggered market launch, suggesting that other countries would only be served two to three months after the US. Over the weekend, two frequently cited Weibo accounts posted statements that contradict this picture. Neither has been confirmed.

Key Facts at a Glance

  • According to a leaker, the first batch is expected to be extremely small; it could take three to five months to reach the target quantity.
  • The same leaker contradicts the reported US launch alone: Apple never indicated a delay to Chinese suppliers.
  • Despite difficulties with hinge assembly, mass production is proceeding according to plan, according to his account.
  • A second account doubts the name "iPhone Ultra" and reserves the name for the anniversary model – after having supported the name itself months ago.
  • For buyers in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (DACH region), the crucial question remains: A narrow opening has a stronger effect here than in the USA, regardless of which countries are involved in the first round.

How narrow the first batch should be

The account Fixed Focus Digital describes the initial stock as extremely limited. They use as a reference point the approximately ten million units that Apple is said to have ordered for this year – it could take three to five months for that quantity to accumulate. The device would therefore be difficult to obtain at launch.

This statement is not an isolated case. Limited initial quantities have been a recurring theme for this product for months; the main reasons cited were issues with the hinge and display. What's new is the indication of how long the delay could last.

Two illustrations of the starting area

In a second post, the same leaker addresses the report that the foldable iPhone will initially only be released in the US. According to his sources, Apple has never indicated any delays to its Chinese suppliers. Mass production is running smoothly despite difficulties with hinge assembly, which is why he expects at least a partial global launch.

Both representations thus stand side by side:

SpeechStarting areaAvailability
Report from Australia (August 13)Initially only the USA, further markets over two to three monthsBottlenecks, price issues, and testing problems as reasons
Fixed Focus Digital (August 16)more countries than just the USAFirst batch extremely limited, three to five months until target quantity

The contradiction cannot currently be resolved. Both sides cite unverifiable contacts: one to Australian network operators and a retailer, the other to the supply chain in China. It is noteworthy that the two statements are not necessarily mutually exclusive: a launch in several countries with very small allocations would ultimately appear similar to a later release date for buyers outside the US.

The doubt about the name comes from an unexpected source

The second leaker, Instant Digital, now considers it unlikely that the foldable model will actually be called "iPhone Ultra." He expects Apple to reserve the name for the anniversary model and its successors, and believes the foldable is not worthy of the name. He provides no evidence; the post is based on Apple's previous use of the suffix.

This is noteworthy for a reason not mentioned in the post itself. The name originally comes from a different Weibo account – and Instant Digital had supported the assessment at the time, describing the fall lineup as iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Ultra. The same source is now retracting its earlier statement. When a leaker confirms their claim, it's consistency, not independent confirmation; when they retract it without new evidence, the value of both statements decreases.

This doesn't change anything regarding the rumors about the anniversary model – an "Ultra" designation was never a given anyway. The Apple Watch Ultra, the M1 Ultra and M3 Ultra chips, and CarPlay Ultra already carry the designation, and the naming question for the foldable device remains open until its official unveiling.

Why a close start hits harder here

For buyers in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, quantity is more important than the country list. Experience shows that when supplies are limited, Apple prioritizes distribution to countries with the highest sales volumes – the German-speaking market represents a small segment in this calculation, and there are no regulatory advantages to compensate for this. A device that launches in several countries but sells out everywhere within hours is of no use to anyone more than a later release date with available stock.

Our expectation: Anyone who actually wants to get their hands on the device this fall will have little choice but to pre-order it within the first minute. This applies regardless of which of the two accounts proves correct – both sides agree on the scarcity; they're only arguing about the map.

Until the official unveiling in early September, both remain speculation. The question will only become definitive once Apple announces the sales launch dates for each country – typically either on stage or immediately afterward in the store.

Would you pre-order a foldable iPhone the moment it's released, or would you rather wait until the first user reviews are in and delivery times have normalized? Let us know your strategy in the comments.
