Apple today released the release candidate for iOS 27.2. This version, apart from a few final fixes, is identical to the version that will be released to everyone in a few days. This confirms which features have actually made it into the update.
The release candidate concludes the testing phase, which began on September 16 with the first beta; the fourth beta of iOS 27.2 followed on October 13. At the same time, Apple released the release candidates for iPadOS 27.2, macOS 27.2, watchOS 27.2, tvOS 27.2, and visionOS 27.2. The builds are listed in Apple's developer release notes.
A release candidate is the final pre-release version. If Apple finds no further critical bugs, this exact build is released as a finished update to all users – in past cycles, the interval between these releases has usually been only a few days. All articles about the system are compiled in the overview for iOS 27.
Key Facts at a Glance
- Apple is distributing the release candidate of iOS 27.2, along with the versions for iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS and visionOS.
- Apple Music has featured a black and white app icon since the fourth beta version.
- Apple has removed the new Health app from the system again with the fourth beta; it is not part of iOS 27.2 and will follow later in the year, initially in US English.
- Siri AI will be available in French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish in the 27.2 series – German is not included.
- With iOS 27.2, a new tracking query will become mandatory in Germany and four other EU countries.
What's included in the finished update
The visible changes are mostly from the first beta of the series. The Apple TV app on the iPhone now includes profiles, including child profiles, with age ratings based on German ratings. Additionally, Siri AI now supports five more languages; previously, it only worked in US English.
Although the redesigned Health app could be tested throughout the entire test series, according to Apple's developer notes, it is not included in the iOS 27.2 package. It will follow later this year and will launch in US English.
What still only exists in the code
For weeks, the test versions contained clues to features that are not active: code findings related to Shortcuts and Apple Music, a redesigned reading view in Apple Books, a filter for Messages suggestions, and proximity-based control for Home accessories.
Such findings reveal what Apple is working on. Once the final version is released, it will be possible to determine what features will be activated and what will remain unreleased.
The versions for iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV and Vision Pro
The version numbers are the same across all systems. On Apple TV, the code prepares Apple Intelligence, and watchOS 27.2 shows a new screenshot preview.
When it comes to the Apple Watch, it's worth considering the downside: An installed watchOS beta cannot be reverted to an older version. This issue is resolved with the final update, as the watch will then run on a regular version.
Why this date matters for readers in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (DACH region)
With the final update, the new tracking query will be mandatory in five EU countries, including Germany. In Austria, the app provider decides whether to implement it; Switzerland is not included. For users in these countries, this is the most noticeable change in the version – certainly more noticeable than the Siri extension, for which German is not among the five new languages.
I expect Apple to release the update within a week of this build; previous point updates appeared a few days after their release candidate. Those who don't want to wait that long can download the build via the developer options in Software Update – on a secondary device, not on their everyday iPhone.
iOS 27.2: Here's what's next
Following the release candidate, the update will be released for all compatible devices, provided Apple doesn't find any further critical bugs. What the update will bring and when it will be released is now clear, except for the exact release date. The new Health app will be released later this year.
