Two days after iOS 27, Apple released the first beta, numbered 27.2. There was no test version of 27.1, even though the update is due to be released in a few weeks. The most likely explanation involves the iPhone Duo, and the same pattern is emerging on the Mac.
Apple released iOS 27 on September 14th for all supported iPhones. The first betas of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS 27.2 followed on September 16th. The intermediate version is therefore missing on all platforms simultaneously.
The purpose of iOS 27.1, however, is clear. According to Apple's announcement regarding the iPhone Duo, the foldable device will ship with iOS 27.1, pre-orders begin on October 16, and sales start on October 23. The remaining specifications, prices, and release dates for the iPhone Duo have been known since its unveiling.

What iOS 27.1 brings to the Duo
On the Duo, Apple has reorganized the interface. Controls on the lock screen, the dock, and in-app navigation have moved to the side; when open, the home screen displays two pages side by side. The status bar is a circular element in the corner, and the Dynamic Island runs vertically along the edge of the display.
These adjustments only make sense on a device with two displays; it would be nearly impossible to test them on a current iPhone. According to Apple's development team, a beta version of Xcode 27.1, which will allow app developers to prepare layouts for the dual-screen setup, is expected to be released in September.
On the Mac, version 27.1 is stuck on an unannounced device
The same situation exists on the Mac, but without official confirmation. According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, MacBook Ultra test units are being internally tested with macOS 27.1; these are the 14- and 16-inch models with OLED touchscreens. macOS 27.1 is reportedly expected to be released at the end of October.
The same report predicted the first developer version of macOS 27.1 would be released in the following days. A day later, the first Mac beta did indeed appear, albeit as macOS 27.2. Gurman is often correct about Apple's product plans, but Apple has not confirmed a name or release date for the notebook.
Why the jump was likely intentional
Immediately after release, developers scour betas for clues about new devices. The amount of information that can be revealed was demonstrated in 2017 by a pre-released version of iOS 11: just days before its official unveiling, it contained the names iPhone X, Face ID, and Animoji.
We suspect that's precisely why Apple is keeping iOS 27.1 out of the public builds. For the Duo, the code would reveal details not shown during the keynote, and for the Mac, it might even reveal details of a device Apple hasn't even unveiled yet. Apple releasing system versions for new hardware outside of its usual schedule isn't new: in 2023, iOS 17.0.2 was initially released only for the iPhone 15 models; the other iPhones received the version a few days later.
Anyone joining the beta now will go directly to version 27.2 and access features like the new Health app, which is being tested there for the first time. The Duo adjustments from version 27.1 are irrelevant for all other iPhones anyway.
