Two days after the release of iOS 27, the next round of testing has begun – but not where everyone expected. Apple has distributed the first beta of iOS 27.2 to developers and is skipping version 27.1 for now. The company has not provided an explanation.
Following a major system release, the first beta of the upcoming point update usually follows within a few days. This part is correct: the testing phase begins two days after the release of the new system versions. Only the version number that would normally have been next is skipped.

What is known about the missing 27.1
iOS 27.1 is the version that will ship with the iPhone Duo. Apple has announced October 16th as the pre-order date and October 23rd as the sales launch for the foldable model. The version must be ready by then.
Version 27.1 includes adjustments for the device's two displays, including a vertical dock, a vertical Dynamic Island, dual-screen layouts, the ability to run two apps side-by-side, and custom features in the camera app. Apple has announced that the tools developers will need to prepare their apps for these features will be released by the end of the month.
Apple hasn't explained why this version isn't undergoing public testing. Our assessment: The company is holding back the Duo adjustments until release because any beta would reveal them beforehand. This interpretation isn't definitive, however – it's also possible that version 27.1 isn't ready internally and Apple is therefore testing the general fixes in the next version.
For current reporting, this means: The next version arriving on conventional iPhones will be numbered 27.2 – even if 27.1 is released earlier.
What Apple has announced for October
Three things are certain, though Apple hasn't assigned them version numbers. Siri AI will initially launch in English; French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish will follow in October. German is not included in this round.
In addition, there are two features that didn't make it into the initial release: automatic password correction and suggestions in Messages conversations. Apple's website states that both will be added in a future software update – which one, the company hasn't specified. A redesigned Health app has also been announced.
Anyone who can install the test version
Initially, access is granted to members of the Apple Developer Program. To access the beta, go to Settings: under "General" and "Software Update," select "Beta Updates" to see the available channels. The public beta is distributed through the free Beta Software Program and is typically released a few days later.
Device compatibility remains unchanged. Point updates do not shift the list within a generation; it continues to apply to all iPhone models from the iPhone 11 and the second-generation iPhone SE onwards.
Two things are essential before installation: a current backup that isn't stored on the device itself, and the willingness to accept potential errors. Reverting to the stable version usually means reinstalling the operating system. A first test version has no place on a device that's used daily.
What this means for the German-speaking region
The new test version doesn't change anything about the Siri AI situation. The assistant isn't launching on iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch in the EU anyway, and the language update in October won't include German – both of which remain unaffected by the version number.
The jump is still interesting, for another reason: Anyone installing a beta version in this country will receive version 27.2, which doesn't include the Duo adjustments at all. For the first time in years, the testing phase is thus bypassing the main version, which will actually be released in October. We expect Apple to release version 27.1 as a finished update around the time of the sales launch, without ever having publicly tested it.
