Apple's Mac Pro has always pushed the boundaries of computing power, especially for professional users in video, photography, and design. After the last refresh in June 2023, which saw Apple move from Intel chips to its own Apple Silicon chips, more innovations are on the way. Here's what to expect from the next generation of Mac Pro, the M4 Mac Pro.
The move to Apple's own chips began with the M2 Ultra chip, which is also used in the Mac Studio. Despite the impressive performance of this chip, there was criticism, especially when compared to the expectations that professional users have of a workstation computer like the Mac Pro. This feedback has prompted Apple to work on an even more powerful version.
M4 Chip – The Next Generation
Apple plans a significant performance boost with the M4 chip. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is working on a regular upgrade cycle for its Mac chips, similar to that of its iPhone chips. The upcoming Mac Pro is expected to use the most powerful M4 chip, known by the codename "Hidra." This chip is said to be specifically designed for demanding AI tasks and offer an improved Neural Engine with more cores.
Unified Memory – More memory than ever before
The Mac Pro could be equipped with up to 500GB of unified memory, a significant increase from the current maximum of 192GB. This memory expansion is crucial for professional applications that work with large amounts of data.
Mac Pro: Design and Engineering Considerations
Since the major design update in 2019, Apple has made little external changes to the Mac Pro. It remains to be seen whether internal adjustments will be made to support the new M4 chips. Although no external design changes are confirmed, the internal upgrades could bring significant new features.
market launch date
The Mac Pro is expected to be the last Mac to receive the M4 chip, with a planned launch in late 2025. This date gives Apple time to further refine the technology and ensure it meets the high expectations of its professional users.
M4 Mac Pro: A new era of performance and innovation
The M4 Mac Pro promises to continue Apple's tradition of innovation and performance. With enhanced AI capabilities and a massive increase in unified memory, Apple is setting new standards in the world of professional desktop computers. Keep an eye on developments, as the M4 Mac Pro could once again redefine the way professionals work. Looking for new accessories?
