With the update to iOS 18.2, Apple introduced a new setting that lets you choose your default apps on your iPhone. WhatsApp supports this feature starting with version 25.8.74, which is available in the App Store. If you want, you can now make WhatsApp your default app for sending messages and making calls. This means your iPhone will automatically open WhatsApp when you want to contact someone from your Contacts app.
How the new setting works
Apple offers a way to define default apps for certain actions in the iOS settings. WhatsApp now appears as a selectable option. This requires that your iPhone is running iOS 18.2 or later and you have the latest version of WhatsApp installed. You can find this section in the settings under:
- Settings > Apps > Default apps
There you can set WhatsApp for two categories:
- Messages
- Calls
If you set WhatsApp as your default, the app will automatically open whenever you send a message or make a call in another app (for example, the Contacts app). WhatsApp will then be used instead of Apple's Messages app or Phone/FaceTime.
Update brings the function
The new feature is part of WhatsApp version 25.8.74, which is available in the App Store. Apple had announced that the feature would initially only be available in the European Union due to the requirements of the Digital Markets Act (DMA). However, it turns out that the option is available worldwide. iPhone users outside the EU can now also set WhatsApp as their default app.
Concrete example in everyday life
For example, if you select a contact in your Contacts app and tap "Message," WhatsApp will open instead of Apple's pre-installed messaging app. The same applies to calls. If you tap the phone icon, WhatsApp will open and the call will be initiated via the app.
