Tesla and Apple CarPlay: How concrete is the support really?

Tesla is apparently preparing to make Apple CarPlay available in its vehicles. This information, obtained by Bloomberg, is generating considerable attention because Tesla has consistently refused to support CarPlay for years. This potential rollout would be one of the most significant software changes in the Tesla ecosystem in a long time.

Mark Gurman, one of the most well-informed Apple journalists, reiterates in his latest report that Tesla plans to integrate CarPlay in the coming months. This isn't the first time he's made this claim , but it carries more weight because Gurman rarely speculates and usually only reports on things once internal decisions have already been made. This development would represent a clear departure from the rigid stance Tesla and Elon Musk have maintained for many years, blocking CarPlay.

When Tesla will truly support CarPlay

According to Gurman , Tesla is working on providing the standard wireless version of Apple CarPlay, not the enhanced CarPlay Ultra that Apple unveiled this summer. The planned integration will run within a window on the existing Tesla interface. This means Tesla retains control over the main view and doesn't allow CarPlay to be a full-screen system. It's more of an app-like embedding that provides access to typical CarPlay features but doesn't allow for significant changes to the vehicle's layout.

The implementation would nevertheless be the biggest innovation for classic CarPlay in years, because Tesla, as one of the most important automakers, was for a long time the only major name to have completely excluded CarPlay. Many owners had repeatedly requested support, but Tesla remained unmoved. Elon Musk had repeatedly indicated that Tesla's own software strategy was paramount and that third-party systems would play no role.

What Tesla currently offers and what could change with CarPlay

Currently, Tesla vehicles already have dedicated apps for Apple Music and Apple Podcasts. These are fully integrated into Tesla's interface and do not run via CarPlay. The potential introduction of CarPlay would go significantly further than the existing Apple services, as it would also allow access to navigation, communication, and other CarPlay apps.

Gurman points out, however, that despite concrete plans, the decision is not final. Elon Musk can stop or delay such projects at any time. Tesla's internal priorities are known for shifting at short notice. Even though preparations have apparently progressed far enough to be publicly announced, a degree of uncertainty remains.

Assessment of the current situation

This move would bring Tesla closer to the Apple ecosystem and fulfill a wish that many drivers have expressed for years. At the same time, Tesla remains true to its policy of maintaining complete control over its own user interface. This is evident in the fact that CarPlay will only be allowed as a window and not as a full interface. This creates a compromise between user desire and Tesla's software philosophy.

CarPlay is getting closer to reality at Tesla.

Tesla appears to be seriously working on making Apple CarPlay available in the coming months. The planned support is limited to the classic wireless CarPlay version and will be integrated into a separate window within the Tesla interface. Gurman's report provides the clearest indication yet that Tesla is changing its stance on CarPlay. Even though Elon Musk could theoretically reverse the decision at any time, everything points to CarPlay becoming a reality in Tesla vehicles soon, bringing one of the most requested features to the Tesla ecosystem for the first time.
