Apple plans bezel-less iPhone 2027 without a visible camera

To mark the 20th anniversary of the iPhone in 2027, Apple is apparently planning to unveil a model that completely eliminates visible display cutouts. The plan is for an iPhone with a continuous, edge-to-edge display – no notch, no Dynamic Island, and no visible front camera. Initial indications of this come from reliable leaker sources and align with previous reports about Apple's long-term display plans.

Placing cameras and sensors directly under the display is not a new concept – some Android manufacturers already use this technology. However, image quality and light transmission have been major weaknesses of such systems. Apple is reportedly working on a solution that overcomes these problems and clearly distinguishes itself from previous approaches. The goal is to present a completely bezel-less iPhone for its anniversary in 2027 that not only looks better but also boasts impressive technical specifications.

Apple is developing an under-display camera for 2027

The Chinese leaker "Digital Chat Station" reported on Weibo that Apple is working on an under-display front camera as planned. This is expected to debut in an iPhone model in 2027 – coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the first iPhone. This would mark the first time Apple has offered a completely seamless display, without any visible camera cutouts.

In parallel, Apple is expected to introduce Face ID under the display for the first time in the Pro version of the iPhone 18 as early as 2026. This would pave the way for a model that completely dispenses with visible components on the front the following year.

Technological advantage through LG Innotek

LG Innotek could make a significant contribution to this development. According to a report from April 2024, the Apple supplier is developing new under-display cameras that leave no visible traces on the display when inactive. The systems are based on a so-called "Freeform Optic" multi-lens array, which reduces image distortion while simultaneously increasing brightness. The goal is to compensate for the typical light loss associated with cameras behind the display.

The technology is currently being evaluated for several Apple projects – including the first foldable iPhone, which is expected to be released before the anniversary model. Whether LG's solution will be used there is still unclear.

24-megapixel camera planned under the display

A report by JP Morgan suggests that Apple will integrate a 24-megapixel under-display camera for the first time in an upcoming foldable iPhone. This would be a significant advancement, as current under-display cameras typically only offer 4 or 8 megapixels – with a noticeable loss of image quality.

The higher resolution suggests that Apple has made progress in improving the display's light transmission without negatively impacting image quality. If this technology is also used in the anniversary model, it would be a technological milestone.

New iPhone design planned for the anniversary

In addition to the invisible front camera, Apple is reportedly working on a fundamental redesign of the iPhone, according to various sources.
