Apple uses Google Gemini technology for Siri

Apple is poised to take a major step in its AI strategy. A new version of Siri is planned, based on Google's Gemini technology. With this, Apple aims to significantly enhance its voice assistant – and finally deliver a competitive answer to other AI systems.

The revamped Siri version is slated for release in March 2026. Simultaneously, Apple will launch new hardware: a smart home display with a speaker base and wall mount, while a new generation of Apple TV and a new HomePod mini are expected to be released soon. These devices are part of a larger plan to make Apple Intelligence more visible and practical for everyday use. The focus is on integrating modern AI – supported by Google, but still controlled by Apple.

The new Siri is powered in the background by a customized model of Google Gemini, as reported by Bloomberg . Apple is paying Google to develop a bespoke Gemini model that runs on Apple's own private cloud compute servers. Data processing therefore takes place on infrastructure controlled by Apple. The model is not publicly accessible and was developed specifically for Siri.

This is not a direct integration of Google services. Functions like Google Search or classic Gemini features do not appear in the user interface. Rather, the underlying model enables Siri to respond more intelligently to requests – for example, web searches or context-sensitive tasks.

Hardware as a carrier for Apple Intelligence

With the new Siri update, Apple is also introducing new devices designed to support the expanded features. These include a smart home display that doubles as a wall-mounted speaker, as well as a new Apple TV and a HomePod mini. These devices are part of a clear strategy: Apple Intelligence is intended to be not only visible on the iPhone or Mac, but also tangible in living rooms, kitchens, and offices.

In June, Apple will unveil iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, visionOS 27, tvOS 27, and watchOS 27 at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). All the new operating systems will heavily rely on AI features. The planned relaunch of Siri is a key element. Apple Intelligence is expected to integrate more deeply into all systems – from voice control and text generation to personalized recommendations.

Problems with the introduction in China

While Apple is preparing for the launch in most markets, China remains challenging territory. Regulatory restrictions continue to hinder the release of Apple Intelligence in the country. Despite existing partnerships with Chinese tech companies, there is no clear timeline for the market launch there. Internally, the company refers to a "rolling target"—a launch without a fixed date.

AI reboot: Apple relies on its own strengths and third-party technology

Apple aims to relaunch Siri with the new version. The collaboration with Google on the Gemini model demonstrates the company's reliance on external technology to further develop its own products. At the same time, Apple retains complete control over the user experience. With new hardware, an expanded AI infrastructure, and a clear focus on Apple Intelligence, Siri is finally expected to reach the level many have anticipated for years.
