Apple is apparently working on significantly expanding the range of professional software available on the iPad. Following Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro, four more applications could soon follow, previously only available on the Mac. This is suggested by a discovery in the App Store revealing new app IDs. The expansion would fit well with current iPad hardware – and further reinforce the focus on the iPad as a work device.

One year after the release of Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro for the iPad, evidence is mounting about the next phase of the pro apps. Apple is reportedly planning to release Pixelmator Pro, MainStage, Motion, and Compressor—all tools that have long been considered professional standards on the Mac. MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris discovered corresponding App Store listings. There hasn't been an official confirmation from Apple yet, but the timing would fit with the launch of the new iPad Pro with the M5 chip.

Four new apps for creative workflows

Pixelmator Pro: More image editing on the go

Apple acquired Pixelmator in November 2024. Currently, only a slimmed-down version of the app is available on the iPad. Pixelmator Pro could now be a more powerful version that is closer to the Mac version. It offers advanced retouching features, layer editing, AI-assisted tools, and professional color correction, among other features. This move would further close the gap between iPad and desktop in photo editing.

Motion and Compressor: Complement to Final Cut Pro

Motion is Apple's tool for animated titles, transitions, and visual effects—and the perfect complement to Final Cut Pro on the Mac. The app is suitable for motion graphics and creative video effects that can be customized.
Compressor is a specialized tool for converting and outputting media formats. It allows video and audio files to be efficiently encoded and optimized for various platforms. This app, too, is closely integrated with Final Cut Pro on the Mac. An iPad version would significantly increase the flexibility of mobile editing and export processes.

MainStage: Live tool for musicians

MainStage on the Mac, in conjunction with Logic Pro, is primarily used for live performances. Musicians and performers use it to compile instruments, effects, and setups for the stage—with direct access during the performance. On the iPad, MainStage would offer a compact, mobile solution for live performance. Combining it with Logic Pro on the tablet would make music production on the go even easier.

Timing remains unclear

The new app IDs in the App Store are a clear indication of the upcoming release. An official release date is currently unknown. It's notable that the discovery was made shortly after the launch of the new iPad Pro with the M5 chip. This would provide the technical prerequisites for the processor-intensive Pro apps.

Professional applications conquer the iPad

If the report proves true, the iPad is on the verge of further professionalization. With Pixelmator Pro, MainStage, Motion, and Compressor, four established pro apps would make the leap from Mac to tablet. This would significantly expand the application possibilities for creative professionals – especially in conjunction with the new, powerful iPads. Apple is thus continuing its plan to establish the iPad not just as a consumer device, but as a serious tool for creative work. (Image: Shutterstock / Gabo_Arts)
