While Samsung, Google, and other manufacturers have already launched several generations of foldable smartphones, Apple has apparently been working on its own solution in the background for years. The iPhone Fold is intended to be not only technically sophisticated but also durable and visually appealing. New reports from Jeff Pu, Ming-Chi Kuo, and Bloomberg provide clues as to how Apple is addressing this challenge.

Titanium and aluminum frame

According to Jeff Pu, the iPhone 18 Fold will feature a metal frame made from a blend of titanium and aluminum. This combination is intended to give the case strength while keeping it lightweight. Bloomberg describes the device as "two titanium iPhone Airs side by side," suggesting a very slim and lightweight design.

Pu doesn't provide any further details about the appearance or shape in his report, but does confirm the choice of materials. Ming-Chi Kuo previously reported that the iPhone Fold's hinge will be made of stainless steel and titanium, while the casing will be made entirely of titanium. This would indicate that Apple would be relying more heavily on high-quality metals for a foldable model than in current iPhone variants.

Apple currently uses titanium in the iPhone Air. Previous Pro models also used it, but this year they switched back to aluminum. The reason for this is reportedly improved heat dissipation and reduced weight. However, for the iPhone Fold, Apple appears to be returning to titanium to ensure greater stability for the complex folding mechanism.

Two displays with different sizes

The iPhone Fold is said to have two screens. According to current information, the outer display measures 5.5 inches, while the inner panel is expected to be 7.8 inches. This makes the outer display roughly the size of an iPhone mini, while the inner display is approximately the size of an iPad mini. The concept apparently envisions the device functioning like a compact smartphone when closed and unfolding into a small tablet when opened. No Face ID, but Touch ID

Interestingly, according to Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone Fold won't support Face ID. Instead, Apple will apparently rely on Touch ID again. A fingerprint sensor in the display or the power button is considered likely. The omission of Face ID could be related to the design of the foldable display, where integrating the required sensors would be more difficult.

iOS 27 with adjustments for the iPhone Fold

Apple is also preparing for the launch of its first foldable device on the software side. According to a Bloomberg report, iOS 27 will be heavily focused on optimization for the iPhone Fold. Apple is said to be working on features specifically designed for the foldable form factor. The goal is to ensure smooth and intuitive operation regardless of the device's state—whether half-open, fully unfolded, or closed. These adjustments are intended not only to improve usability but also to ensure that apps and system functions can transition seamlessly between display sizes. This would make iOS 27, for the first time, an operating system that fully supports not only smartphones but also hybrid formats like the iPhone Fold.

Current demand for the iPhone 17

In his report, Jeff Pu also points out that Apple is currently experiencing stronger-than-expected demand for the iPhone 17. This suggests that the brand continues to maintain a stable market position and that there is sufficient purchasing interest to support the launch of a premium device like the iPhone Fold. This would be an opportune time for Apple to introduce a foldable model.
