Apple is reorganizing: New head of AI sought

Apple is once again facing a major personnel change – and a crucial one. After a year full of uncertainty surrounding artificial intelligence, the position of Chief AI Officer needs to be filled. John Giannandrea, once brought in to savior Siri and the company's AI focus, has lost his position. Apple is now considering both internal and external candidates to fill the vacant position.

The past few months have been anything but quiet for Apple when it comes to artificial intelligence. The launch of Apple Intelligence, originally intended as a major advance in AI, barely lived up to expectations. The long-heralded update to Siri also fell short of the expectations for a modernized, context-based voice command. Behind the scenes, this is leading to a rethink—and a reshuffle at the top.

A year of AI turbulence

In March, the company's top management decided that John Giannandrea was no longer the right person for the position. Giannandrea had played a central role in machine learning at Google and, when he joined Apple, was considered a key figure in finally making Siri more intelligent and competitive. But despite years of work, the big breakthrough failed to materialize. Following his departure, Mike Rockwell, head of the Vision Pro division, temporarily took over leadership of Siri and AI development. Rockwell is known for his technical understanding and experience in product launches, but he has no traditional background in artificial intelligence. Initially, he was considered internally as a possible successor to Giannandrea, but according to Bloomberg , this possibility has since fallen through.

Search for a successor

Apple is currently reviewing various options for filling its AI leadership position, considering both internal and external candidates. According to insiders, a senior AI manager from Meta is at the top of the list. This would be a remarkable development, as in recent months, it has mostly been Meta that has poached talent from Apple – not the other way around. One reason for the external search is the lack of young talent within the company. Despite Apple's size and wealth of resources, there are apparently few internal employees who possess both the technical depth and strategic vision to reorient the company's AI strategy.

The personnel change as a signal

In parallel with the search for a new leader, Apple has restructured its AI structures. A new department called Superintelligence Labs has been established. It will consolidate the development of Apple Intelligence and related AI projects while unifying the company's research approach. The creation of this department is seen as an attempt to bring more clarity and direction to Apple's AI efforts—and possibly also to attract new talent from outside. What's particularly interesting is that with this restructuring, Apple is doing exactly what Meta has successfully done in recent years. Meta had specifically recruited specialists in the field of machine learning—including several high-ranking employees from Apple itself.

Meta as a competitor and talent magnet

A prominent example of this transition is Ruoming Pang, the former head of Apple's fundamental models team. Pang joined Meta after the company reportedly offered him a compensation package worth more than $200 million over several years. This example highlights the high prices currently being waged in the industry for AI talent—and why Apple is finding it increasingly difficult to retain experienced specialists or attract new ones. Salary levels in the industry have changed dramatically due to the generative AI revolution. Top talent with experience in large language models or neural networks can now demand compensation that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago. Even for a company with Apple's financial strength, this is becoming a challenge, especially when competitors from Silicon Valley are willing to make almost unlimited offers.

A race for the future of AI

Apple is therefore faced with a dilemma. On the one hand, the company has sufficient resources to play a leading role in the AI field. On the other hand, it clearly lacks clear leadership and direction. The backlog in developing its own AI systems is undeniable, and the slow implementation of Apple Intelligence has shown that Apple still has to catch up with providers such as Google, Meta, or OpenAI. The decision whether to appoint an internal or external candidate is therefore not just a personnel issue, but a strategic decision. An experienced external AI specialist could bring new impetus, but would also represent a break with Apple's current, highly insular culture. An internal candidate, on the other hand, could ensure continuity but would first have to prove that they have the necessary innovative strength to lead Apple back to the top.

From upheaval to realignment: Apple relies on fresh impetus

Apple's search for a new AI chief is more than just a reshuffle within the leadership team. It symbolizes an attempt to regain lost confidence in its own ability to innovate. John Giannandrea's departure demonstrates that Apple has recognized how important a clear vision and technical expertise have become in the era of artificial intelligence. With the establishment of Superintelligence Labs, the temporary role of Mike Rockwell, and the possible recruitment of an external AI manager, Apple is sending a signal that the company is ready to rethink its strategy. Whether this step is sufficient to close the gap with its competitors remains to be seen.
