Apple Glasses News: Market launch planned for 2026 or 2027

Apple Glasses have been considered one of Apple's most exciting projects for years. The smart glasses are expected to launch in late 2026 or early 2027. However, the first version won't offer the hoped-for augmented reality experience. Instead, it is expected to have features closer to the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses.

Apple's plans for its own glasses are no secret. There have long been indications that Apple wants to develop a device that goes beyond the Apple Vision Pro and offers a wearable device suitable for everyday use. The goal is lightweight glasses that can display digital content directly in the field of vision. However, the technology isn't advanced enough yet. Miniaturization, weight, and battery life are key hurdles. Therefore, Apple is working on a slimmed-down first version of Apple Glasses, which, while not yet impressively capable of augmented reality, will hit stores much sooner.

First generation without AR display

According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, the first generation of Apple Glasses will not feature displays. Instead, the glasses will be equipped with cameras for photo and video recording. There will also be an audio system that enables playback and recording. The glasses will rely on an iPhone for the actual data processing. Thus, with the first version of Apple Glasses, Apple is positioning itself more as a competitor to Meta's Ray-Ban glasses than as a direct provider of a full-fledged AR experience.

Augmented Reality is in the future

The actual vision of glasses with transparent displays that can overlay data in the field of vision is still several years away. Apple doesn't want to bring a heavy and cumbersome solution like the Apple Vision Pro to market. Instead, it wants to create glasses suitable for everyday use that are as visually as possible similar to regular glasses. This requires significantly smaller and lighter technology and batteries.

Several voices, including Gurman and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, predict that Apple Glasses will be released in late 2026 or early 2027. This timeline has appeared in previous rumors and suggests that Apple is struggling with internal challenges. Gurman is known for the accuracy of his forecasts and has repeatedly emphasized that a 2026 launch is realistic, but a delay to 2027 remains a possibility.

Advantage of the Apple ecosystem

A key advantage for Apple is its own ecosystem. While Meta and other providers are struggling to make their smart glasses compatible with the iPhone, Apple has a natural advantage. The glasses can be connected directly to existing devices such as the iPhone, AirPods, or Apple Watch. This creates deeper integration, as has already been successfully implemented with other products. There are also indications that Apple is working on AirPods with integrated cameras in parallel. Such devices could capture the environment and forward the data to an iPhone and Apple Intelligence for computer vision purposes. With audio capabilities, high-quality microphones, and new cameras, the AirPods would be able to perform many tasks currently reserved for smart glasses. In combination with Apple Glasses, this would allow additional camera perspectives and more data to be used for Apple Intelligence.
