Apple bereitet großes MacBook Pro Redesign für 2026/2027 vor

Apple introduced the first MacBook Pro with the M5 chip this week. Nevertheless, preparations for the next big step are already underway internally. According to a recent Bloomberg report, a completely new generation of the MacBook Pro is currently being worked on, scheduled for release in late 2026 or early 2027. Plans include fundamental design changes, new technologies, and a different user experience. The goal: a lighter, thinner, and technically advanced MacBook Pro.

The MacBook Pro series is one of Apple's most important product lines. After the major redesign in 2021 and the regular chip updates with the M1, M2, M3, M4, and most recently the M5, an even bigger overhaul is now imminent. Future models are expected to feature OLED displays, touchscreens, a new display design without a notch, and, for the first time, chips from the upcoming M6 generation. There are also plans for Face ID, although these are not yet finalized. This will significantly change the MacBook Pro not only technically but also visually.

OLED instead of Mini-LED

The current MacBook Pro models use mini-LED technology, but Apple plans to switch to OLED for the next generation. OLED displays offer several advantages over mini-LED, including better contrast, deeper blacks, a slimmer design, and overall higher image quality. This display technology is already used in iPhones and the Apple Watch and will soon become standard on the MacBook Pro.

Touchscreen is coming – but optional

According to Bloomberg , the upcoming MacBook Pro series will be equipped with touchscreens for the first time. The familiar keyboard and trackpad will remain. The touchscreen is intended simply as an additional input option, especially for users who are accustomed to it from tablets or smartphones. To avoid a common problem with touchscreen laptops—the screen giving way or wobbling when touched—Apple has, according to the report, reinforced the hinge and the display hardware. This ensures the display remains stable, even under intensive touchscreen use.

New hole design instead of notch

Another planned step is the removal of the familiar display notch. Instead, Apple will opt for a so-called punch-hole design. The front camera will be housed in a small cutout – similar to the "Dynamic Island" on the iPhone. Whether there will be a corresponding software solution to integrate the camera cutout on the Mac similarly to the iPhone remains to be seen.

M6 chips as a computing basis

The new generation of MacBook Pro will be based on M6 series chips. This marks Apple's consistent continuation of the development of its own chip family. The M6 chips are expected to offer even greater performance and energy efficiency—especially for professional applications such as video editing, 3D rendering, and data-intensive tasks. However, enhanced M5 Pro and M5 Max models are expected to be released before the M6 launch in early 2026.

Thinner and lighter design

After the slightly heavier and thicker redesign in 2021, Apple is now returning to a lighter form factor. The next-generation MacBook Pros are designed to be thinner and more compact overall, without sacrificing key ports or performance. This is intended to improve mobility without compromising functionality.

Face ID is being tested

Additionally, Bloomberg reports that Apple is currently considering replacing Touch ID with Face ID in the future. However, this change isn't expected with the next model cycle. Until then, fingerprint login will remain standard on the MacBook Pro.

The biggest MacBook Pro update since Apple Silicon

Apple is working on a comprehensive redesign of the MacBook Pro, scheduled for release in late 2026 or early 2027. Plans include OLED displays, a touchscreen that complements the traditional input concept, and a new display design without a notch. This will also include M6 chips, a thinner chassis, and possible future plans for Face ID. Despite the introduction of new technologies, the proven user experience will remain intact but will be expanded with modern options.
