Shortly before its market launch, Apple is apparently significantly increasing production numbers for the iPhone Duo. Instead of just under 10 million, 14 million devices are now expected to be produced in the next twelve months. The real question is whether production capacity can keep up.
Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo have apparently prompted Apple to revise its plans. According to a DigiTimes report, Foxconn and its component suppliers have been instructed to increase production by approximately 44 percent. The target for a twelve-month period is said to be rising from 9.7 million to 14 million units.
DigiTimes relies on unnamed sources within the supply chain. The Taiwanese trade publication is close to its suppliers regarding production figures, but is considered less accurate concerning delivery dates and product plans. The report does not cite any document or order confirmation.
Key Facts at a Glance
- Apple is expected to raise its production target for the iPhone Duo from 9.7 million to 14 million devices in twelve months.
- This represents an increase of approximately 44 percent.
- DigiTimes believes the new goal will be difficult to achieve because the assembly is still experiencing problems.
- In Germany, the delivery time online was most recently the end of January 2027.
- The number matches an earlier report that orders had already increased.
What will change in the planning?
According to the report, the strong pre-order phase is the trigger. Apple itself had described the demand after the start of pre-orders as exceptional. The new 14 million figure refers to twelve months, not the remainder of 2026.
This translates to an increase in the target from approximately 0.81 million to approximately 1.17 million devices per month. That's about 360,000 more devices each month, distributed across a production line that has only just started operating.
A comparison of the figures from the past few weeks
Several figures regarding the iPhone Duo have been circulating since September. They do not measure the same thing, therefore they can only be compared side by side, not directly calculated.
| Time | Info | Measured variable |
|---|---|---|
| mid-September | 6 to 8 million | Quantity reserved for 2026 |
| mid-September | over 5 million | Sales target for retailers for 2026 |
| End of September | approximately 6 million | Counterpoint's sales forecast for 2026 |
| October 10 | plus 30 percent, under 10 million | Orders from suppliers |
| October 22 | 9.7 to 14 million | Production target for twelve months |
The gap between sales forecast and production target is striking. The approximately six million units sold by the end of the year, which Counterpoint expects, only cover a little over two months. The 14 million, on the other hand, represents a production volume for an entire year.
The initial figure of 9.7 million matches a report from October 10th. According to that report, Apple had already increased orders from suppliers by 30 percent, but the total number remained below 10 million devices. Both reports come from different sources, yet they are consistent.
Why manufacturing remains the bottleneck
DigiTimes qualifies its own report: The higher target is a challenge, and the quantity depends on the progress of assembly. In mid-September, final assembly at Foxconn was reportedly only achieving just over 60 percent yield. This was compounded by shortages of displays and hinge components.
A higher goal does not automatically accelerate production. As long as four out of ten devices require rework, the yield determines how many of the 14 million are actually produced.
The guideline value remains in effect until the end of January
On the day pre-orders opened in Germany, the delivery time in the online store for all configurations jumped to January 25, 2027, just over three months after the sales launch on October 23. Germany, Austria, and Switzerland are part of the first launch wave. A further 28 countries will follow on October 30 and will be supplied from the same production facility.
I expect the online delivery dates to move forward in the coming weeks, provided the assembly team can actually manage the increased pace. Anyone ordering now should still plan for delivery by the end of January and keep an eye on the date in their order overview.
