The iPhone Duo won't be compatible with the Apple Pencil at its launch on Friday. However, that won't last much longer: support is already included in the next update, which is about to be released.
Support for the Apple Pencil (USB-C) on the iPhone Duo is part of iOS 27.2. This is shown by analyst Max Weinbach of Creative Strategies, who installed the Release Candidate of iOS 27.2 on a Duo. In his post on X, he shares a photo of himself writing on the Duo with the pencil and notes that the feature works. At the unveiling, Apple had only announced that the Duo would support the pencil "later this year." Specifications and prices for the device are in the iPhone Duo overview.
Key Facts at a Glance
- Pencil support for the iPhone Duo will arrive with iOS 27.2, not at the end of the year.
- Max Weinbach tested the stylus with the iOS 27.2 release candidate on a Duo.
- Only the Apple Pencil with USB-C is supported.
- The Duo will be released on October 23rd with iOS 27.1; the stylus will follow with the update.
What Apple had announced
In its German press release announcing the launch, Apple states that the Duo will support the Apple Pencil with USB-C later this year. Users will then be able to take notes, draw, or annotate documents on both displays. No release date or version number was mentioned, and Apple did not specify other stylus models for the Duo.

What the Release Candidate shows
Weinbach published his discovery on October 21. In the photo, he is using the Pencil to annotate a drawing area on the Duo; the right control panel is visible at the edge. The Release Candidate is the final test version before release; Apple distributed it to developers on Monday, October 19.
This is therefore not a discovery in the code, but a function that is already working in the test version.
Initial sales launch without a pen
The iPhone Duo will be available in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland on October 23rd and will ship with iOS 27.1. Initial reviews indicated that Apple Pencil support was not yet active. Those who receive the Duo on Friday will only be able to use the stylus after updating to iOS 27.2.
All news about the version is collected on the topic page for iOS 27.2.
The pen matches the screen surface
I consider the early release date more important than the pen itself. Because the release candidate has already been distributed, I expect that only days, rather than weeks, will pass between the sales launch and the update. This quickly diminishes the significance of one of the issues that stood out as unfinished in the tests.
Then there's the internal display. Several reviewers describe the matte nanotexture as paper-like, a surface well-suited for stylus input. However, if you don't already own an Apple Pencil with USB-C, you'll need this specific model; Apple doesn't list any other compatible versions for the Duo.
