Apple Watch Series 12: Sensor in the bracelet?

A new leak suggests that the Apple Watch Series 12 could get an additional health sensor – not in the case, but directly in the band. The catch: The feature is said to be tied to the cheapest band.

The Apple Watch already tracks an impressive range of health metrics, from heart rate and blood oxygen to wrist temperature. For years, the idea has circulated that Apple could integrate additional sensors not into the watch case, but into the watch band. Now, leaker Kosutami has taken up this very theory and claims that this plan will become a reality for the Series 12. This claim fits into the existing rumors surrounding expanded sensor capabilities for the Series 12, which already include a significantly expanded sensor array on the underside of the watch case. However, this new clue shifts the focus to an unusual location.

A sensor that is injected into the silicone band

According to Kosutami, the additional sensor will be permanently integrated into the wristband via injection molding – specifically into the silicone band. This most likely refers to the fluoroelastomer band, the standard sport band that Apple includes when no special band variant is ordered. Other materials will be excluded for the time being: How the sensor could be integrated into bands made of fabric, leather, or metal has not yet been determined internally.

This limitation would be technically understandable. A solidly molded sensor is much easier to integrate into a homogeneous silicone body than into a braided or link-shaped band. However, this would have a direct consequence for users: the latest health sensor might only be available via a single band variant – and that would be the cheapest one.

Why the cheapest tape isn't the whole picture

At first glance, it seems paradoxical to tie a new premium feature to the entry-level band. However, rather than reserving it exclusively for the included band, it's more likely that Apple would sell this sensor-equipped fluoroelastomer variant separately. This would allow the feature to be marketed as a standalone accessory without excluding buyers of more expensive bands – they could simply purchase the sensor band separately.

Such a model would also be strategically attractive for Apple: A sensor relocated to the band creates a new accessory category with recurring revenue potential, instead of further densifying the already dense electronics in the watch case.

What the sensor could measure

The leak doesn't specify what the sensor is intended to detect. However, previous reports suggest that Apple is researching several external sensor options. These included a sensor for measuring fluid balance and an approach that tracks muscle movement. Both approaches would be suitable for placement in the band, as a band-based sensor could expand the contact area with the skin and provide measurement points beyond just the underside of the casing.

This direction fits a pattern emerging with other models as well: for the Apple Watch Ultra 4, a doubling of the sensor components is being rumored, and with the rejection of a Touch ID integration, expanded health functions stood out as the clearer priority. The expansion of the sensor technology appears to be the dominant theme throughout the next Apple Watch generation.

Blood glucose monitoring remains a separate issue

One candidate regularly mentioned in connection with band-based sensors is non-invasive blood glucose monitoring. Apple has demonstrably been working on this for years, but this project has not yet been linked to the band. Instead, the technology is expected to be integrated into the optical sensor array under the watch case. When such a function would be ready for market remains completely unclear – the band-based sensor from the current leak is unlikely to be related.

A hit rate with precisely one weakness

Kosutami has a decent track record with Apple leaks and was recently at the forefront of his prediction that Apple had temporarily halted development of AirPods with cameras. However, his track record regarding the Apple Watch is less convincing. Back in 2023, the leaker claimed that Apple would change the way bands connect to the watch – a prediction that proved to be significantly wrong. The current sensor rumor, therefore, once again revolves around the area where Kosutami has accumulated the most inaccurate predictions, making caution advisable.

The old dream of a new band connection

An interesting side issue that has resurfaced is the persistent rumor that Apple might redesign the watch band connection mechanism. This redesign, however, is not expected for this year's watch, but rather is part of the major Apple Watch redesign rumored for 2027, including a new band system – meaning a later generation. The possibility of a band-integrated sensor in the Series 12 and a changed band connection only about a year later is difficult to reconcile, leaving it unclear whether the two are even related.
