AirPods Ultra: Leaker reports development halt

A well-known leaker claims that Apple has put the development of the camera-enabled AirPods Pro on hold. This news is surprising because the project was recently considered to be quite advanced – and raises the question of whether it's a pause or a final cancellation.

For months, reports have been circulating about a higher-priced AirPods variant whose integrated infrared cameras would capture the wearer's surroundings and derive AI functions from this data. Positioned above the AirPods Pro 3, the model is rumored to be called AirPods Ultra. Now, a leaker has come forward with a contrary report: development has supposedly been halted. This has not been confirmed – and the sources are anything but clear.

What the leaker claims

The claim comes from the prototype collector and leaker, who goes by the name Kosutami appears. In a brief post on X, he apparently corrected an earlier statement from June, in which he said the project was "completed," and clarified that it had instead been suspended. He did not provide any further details.

This information should be interpreted with caution, as the track record of this source is mixed. Around ten months before the market launch, Kosutami was correct in his prediction of the iPhone 16 Pro's metal-encapsulated battery and provided an early glimpse of an Apple Watch band made from the controversial FineWoven material. However, the announcement that the AirPods Pro 3 would be released as early as August 2024 proved to be false. A single post without supporting evidence is therefore an indication, but not a certainty.

The contradiction to previous reports

The news is particularly significant because it contradicts recent reports. Bloomberg wrote in May that the camera-equipped AirPods had reached an advanced testing stage and were nearing completion, suggesting imminent mass production. However, the same report also included a caveat: Apple might postpone the launch if the quality of the visual intelligence features developed for Siri proved unsatisfactory.

This is precisely the core of the project. The built-in cameras are not intended for taking photos or videos, but are designed solely to transmit visual environmental information to Siri. These infrared sensors would connect the earbuds, marketed as AirPods Ultra, to Apple Intelligence – an approach that Kosutami described back in February and which has since been confirmed by other sources. Apple has reportedly been pursuing this project for approximately four years.

The Siri problem in the background

The delay in the launch is primarily due to one reason: the dependence on the completely revamped assistant. Apple originally planned to sell the headphones in the first half of 2026, but held them back because Siri AI, the foundation for the new features, wasn't yet ready. Siri AI is now included in the ongoing iOS 27 beta, but won't be widely available until the release of iOS 27 in September.

Even before the current announcement of the halt, the timeline had already been pushed back further: According to a recent report, the camera-equipped AirPods are now expected to be released towards the end of 2027, again due to ongoing difficulties with the AI software. An additional factor is the industry-wide shortage of memory and other chips, which is also making it difficult for Apple to source components. Whether this bottleneck is behind the now-announced suspension remains unclear.

Hardware ready, software not

The resulting picture is contradictory: On the one hand, hardware that appears to be technically quite advanced, and on the other, AI software whose maturity will determine its market launch. "Suspended" in this context can mean many things – from a temporary prioritization of other projects to a fundamental rethink. As long as Apple remains silent and the report is based on a single, unverified source, the status of the camera-equipped AirPods remains unclear.
